Frederick Douglass once said “It is not light that we need, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake.” This means that difficult circumstances are needed to become better versions of ourselves. As someone who overcame the difficulty of balancing academics, athletics, and involvement with clubs and organizations on campus, I personally agree with this statement. Based upon the qualities I developed during these difficult circumstances, Frederick Douglass would believe I’m deserving of a scholarship bearing his name.…

Honors committee, As long as I can remember I have sought challenges in academics. Until only recently I didn't know why I pushed myself as hard as I have in school, but now I understand it is because I truly love learning. For me, discovering something new or unknown, teaching myself a new skill, or learning more about the world around me is one of the most gratifying things in my life. This is part of why I think I should be admitted into the honors program here at the University of Iowa. As a young child I was insatiably curious, asking my mother questions ad nausea, never satisfied with simple answers.…

Almost every Saturday morning when I was in elementary school, my mother would wake me up for breakfast which usually consisted of cinnamon toast and cereal, I would get dressed in my favorite purple outfit, and pack. I would fill my small book bag with Barbie dolls, coloring books, and the whatever I was reading for school. Before leaving, my mother would make sure to stop by the gas station for snacks and to fill up on gas. We were going on a trip! We were headed to my grandparents’ house forty-five minutes away in Pascagoula, Mississippi; however, it felt like we had to drive for a full day.…

It was April 15th, 2013 and I was the 15-year-old, innocent sophomore with a perfect record, sitting in the principal’s office waiting for my punishment. They don’t tell you who I am as a person, nor do they tell you if I would be a good candidate for your school.
