This semester, I met a wonderful group of students; however, initially I was very hesitant because I constantly worried that I would not be able to perform to the best of my abilities as a mentor. While my students were in the College of Natural Sciences, they were very diverse; some had come in knowing what their major was, but many were either undeclared or looking to transfer to another college. Along with this, some students came in with many college credits while others were completely fresh to university life. Finding a common ground was very difficult with the students. Rather than planning sessions that would assist them with their course work, I …show more content…
From home-sickness to struggling being a freshman that is a junior in credit hours, I began to understand what molded them to be who they are, and the unique difficulties each one of them faced. From there I was able to take note of what I could during the FIG session to ease their frustrations, such as introducing session dedicated to studying and learning how to do so efficiently, as well as low intensity activities. However, through my one-on-one meetings, I also discovered that the entire time I felt that I was not doing enough for my students, many were actually grateful for what I have done for them. Some conveyed that the session allowed them to relax during stressful weeks and that they were able to apply many of the lessons learned from various presentations presented. Others were just grateful that I was available to talk to them one on one or provide personal advice in other to grow and become better students. Through experiences like these, it made me realize that I can make an impact on students’ lives and help them further their college

For this project, I interviewed Kelsey Shoff, a junior who is my lab partner for microbiology. After chatting for a bit, I began asking her questions and it turns out we have similar interest when it comes to what kind of study we like to do. The first question I asked her was about what kind of field work she is pursing at Sage and if she had any doubts or changes along the way. Her response is similar to what mine was when I first started my college search-…

Not everyone who attends college are successful at completing the courses needed to graduate. For many reasons, college students are forced to drop out willingly, are withdrawn by administration, or simply lose interest in furthering their education. However, the college students who complete college successfully and make it to graduation share some habits that make the odds of being successful work in their favor. Many college students succeed because they make it a priority to attend and involve themselves in class sessions regularly, take control of their education, and nurture relationships with the instructors on their school campus. To be honest, I was only inducted into Phi Theta Kappa during this past spring semester. I was honored to be inducted because I am the first one in my family to go to college. This means a lot to me and my family, be recognized for my academic achievements. I hope to be able to remain involved in honors societies such as Phi Theta Kappa throughout my career at UIC. Though my experience with PTK is limited I still have several ways in which I plan to contribute by helping fellow students, being involved in German language and studies, participating in athletics.…

I recently participated in a college course, Introduction to Psychology, at Misericordia University this past year. Taking this course has taught me to expand my comfort zone by interacting with students whom I would not normally associate with, and consider various ideas and opinions from other individuals. This course has also taught me that it is essential to communicate with teachers and classmates, as they often have different viewpoints and can help make improvements, whether it is to help you academically or as a person in general. During my stay at Misericordia University, there were times I had missed a few classes and unfortunately fell behind. Thankfully, my professor and classmates were more than happy to assist by sending the information I missed and explaining the details I did not understand.…

Many people come into college feeling unprepared, nervous, and unconfident, and while being convinced that I was indeed prepared, I couldn’t help but feel some of these stressful emotions. Over the past month and a half, I have adapted to my new environment that is Pacific Lutheran University (PLU), and feel much more sure of myself as I continue through this semester. I have learned about what skills and mindsets can lead to a successful college experience, such as hope, grit, and resilience. I have also been able to reflect on myself as a person, and identify strengths, values, and abilities I possess that I can use to my advantage. I really enjoyed the time I spent in Mrs. Flinn’s fourth grade classroom over Spring Break. I was able to observe for a total of four hours between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. During my time with the fourth graders, I took a closer look at the solid behavior classroom supports being used. Along with these supports, I was extremely impressed by the way Mrs. Flinn handled classroom management. Even though I observed during a very exciting week, she had great control over her students.…

Before I began my Freshman Development Seminar course with Professor Furet, I believed that this class would not be of good use to me. The reason for this was because of my beliefs in self-teaching myself to learn the basics with additional help from other sources. However, it did not turn out the way I wanted it to be. Therefore, I had to pay to get taught what I could have done on my own, at least that is what I convinced myself then and there. Throughout my class sessions with Ms. Furet, I learned more than I could have ever imagined.…
