Sugar may be sweet and good to the taste but can be very dangerous to our health and it may also be as addicting as cocaine. Sugar may be an easier and cheaper access to many but in the end it can be highly costly. When we drink sugary drinks we do not think of the consequences it has on our overall health.which is why I decided to do my food policy project on sugar. I wanted to go in depth and research the impacts of sugar on our overall health.
The FDA has jurisdiction over all the food under the FDCA (Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act) which is a set of laws that was passed by Congress in 1938 giving authority to the FDA to oversee the safety of food, drugs, and cosmetics. In California, the food and drug branch (FDB) serves to protect and improve the health of the people by verifying that foods, drugs, and other consumable products are safe and not falsely advertised. The FDB is responsible for regulating, processing, and distributions of food products in California. Businesses in California must obtain a FBD license by law if they are if they are processing and distributing food products. There were 3 San Francisco supervisors that had voted to approve health warnings on ads for sugary sodas and other sugary drinks. The warning would include things such as, beverages can contribute and increase obesity, diabetes and other serious health problems. According to CBS News “The label for billboards and other ads would read: WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay”.
