Upon entering high school, I didn’t know what to expect. I was very shy, only talking when it was necessary. Because of the magnet program that I was accepted into, I was separated from my friends and other familiar faces. Going to school became a routine: get up, get ready, take classes, come home, do homework, then go to sleep. This cycle would continue until a tall, fashionable woman came into my coding class. Throughout the majority of my life, I was self-conscious and constantly worried about how I was perceived by others. As a child, I had always felt slightly out of place among my peers. I was just a little too quirky to fit into any of the groups at my school and I was too shy to force my way into one. My mother, like most parents, attempted to always provide for me the best opportunities that she could afford for me, although she had severely limited resources. I grew up in a neighbor with others of my low socioeconomic status. This particular region in Savannah, Georgia was predominately inhabited by minorities, and was not recognized for its academic excellence. Realizing that the poor education in this area only perpetuated the poverty, my mother fought the school board to allow me to attend school in another district; initially, she was unsuccessful. Based on former educator’s evaluation of me, the school, did not believe that the problem was in the system, but within me.…

Being myself is effortless over attempting to mimic others’ behaviors. When I am true to myself, I am not required to stress so much about anyone contradicting or having negative opinions to say when I do not choose the same decisions as them. The pressure to look like everyone around and conform to society decreases as I learn my own self worth. Showing my own character by doing what I trust is correct, dressing the way I am comfortable in and by not letting people's opinion influence my decisions , has permitted me to grow as a person. For example, I participate in activities that I enjoy and take classes that I find accommodating, to allow myself to stay true to myself.…
