He disagreed with the politics of then president Marco Fidel Suarez and participated in a protest movement against Suarez.
In 1928 After the banana worker’s strike in Magdalena, he gained enormous national popularity. The US government under Calvin Coolidge threatened to invade if the Colombian government did not intervene to protect the interests of the United Fruit Company United Fruit representatives reported the strike as “communistic subversive activity” and had sent numerous telegrams to the US Secretary of State, Frank B. Kellogg. The Colombian army fired upon the strikers resulting in numerous deaths.
Gaitan using his already rising popularity calling for accountability to those involved. In 1933, he left the Colombian Liberal Party to create the Union Nacional Izquierdista Revolucionaria (National Leftist Revolutionary Union), or UNIR. This was his own political dissident movement. He divided the country into two groups. Oligarchy and the people. He defined Oligarchy as corrupt and the latter as deserving of “moral restoration”.
