F. Scott Fitzgerald's Hamlet, Jay Gatsby As An Anti Hero

An antihero is a type of protagonist who lacks the typical characteristics associated with heros. While heros are seen as charming, morally conscious, and brave; anti heroes lack these traits or combine them with undesirable traits as they are often morally corrupt, unskilled, and unapproachable in social settings. Anti heroes have been a driving literary device for many years. Hamlet, Jay Gatsby, and Huckleberry Finn can all be interpreted as anti heroes. Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in the amount and popularity of anti heros in the media. Characters in TV such as Dexter Morgan and those in movies such as Gollum are both anti heroes. However, there are anti heroes in real life as well. One of the best examples of this is former president Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton possesses many of the traits of a traditional hero. Since an anti hero combines traditional hero traits with less desirable ones, it makes sense that Clinton would have a few redeeming qualities. For example, he is very charming. He could not have won the presidential election without being charming. He also improved his community through the legislation he passed during his time in office.
