“Captain, hatch three is open.” A girl says, peering over her terminal.
A tall silhouette stands before her, gripping the side railing, peering through the window out into space.
“Don’t-” Before the man could speak, the girl interrupts.
“Call you captain, sir?”
Turning around, the man squints his eyes. “Where is everybody?”
“They’re eating, Captain.” The girl gazes at the man, but only for a short second.
The man known as the Captain returns to the window, sighing. Outside, he saw the bright glow of Earth’s atmosphere. Africa could be seen below, and above that, large formations of clouds. The ship was on standby, and many of the crew were on break. The Captain never seemed to take a break, neither did the girl by his side. He dwelled in the bridge hours at a time, often forgetting to sleep and eat.

The girl stopped typing and moved her head to the side of the screen, revealing her glasses and black hair.
“Yes, Captain. It seems to be working fine.” With a few taps to the keyboard, an image of the cargo bay faded onto the large window. It was footage, showing door three opening and closing. “Nice. Well, I’d say we’re ready for another landing shuttle then. We need more supplies. The crew eats too much.”
“With all due respect sir…” She stands up, and stretches her arms over her head. “There isn’t much to do for the crew at the moment-”
The Captain walks towards the girl, arms crossed. “They never acted like this until

Fitzgerald’s writing was greatly affected by the events in his life. In The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald shows us his life story through someone else. He uses how he grew up poor in his life and gives us an example of that through Nick in The Great Gatsby. It also shows how Fitzgerald grew up always around rich people and did not like them. This would lead the reader to believe that Nick in The Great Gatsby is based off of Fitzgerald’s real life events.…

CONTRA MUNDUM -- Being a short and very personal reverie concerning the tale of Sebastian Flyte and Charles Ryder I first saw "Brideshead Revisited" when I was very young. I didn't understand everything in the story but for some reason I was extremely fascinated, and I remember wondering why that funny young man with the teddy bear was so unhappy. This was a great mystery to me. I saw it again years later, and I read the book. Now I could see all of the things that I couldn't understand when I was younger: Sebastian's homosexuality, his problems with alcohol, with his family, with the world in general, but even though all of these things are supposed to explain his character, the fact that he is so unhappy remains as great a mystery as ever;…

Social commentary can be defined as the act of using pretentious means to comment on issues in a society. F. Scott Fitzgerald used The Great Gatsby as social commentary to criticize the ethical issues related to the wealthy. Although published 100 years ago in the "Roaring Twenties", Fitzgerald’s use of social commentary in The Great Gatsby relates to today’s atmosphere by stressing the significance of money and material things. Moral decay, the act of losing positive virtues, and the decline of decent individual ethics often go hand and hand in society, with an example being adultery. A modern example of adultery is the Tiger Woods scandal, where Tiger reportedly “confessed to cheating with as many as 120 women behind his wife’s back”…

In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald writes from the perspective of Nick Carraway to critique society’s perpetuation of materialistic avarice, which creates socioeconomic division and inequality. Fitzgerald employs negative capability to subtly highlight Nick’s dissatisfaction with his own livelihood and identity; Nick often refuses to divulge the complete depth of his thoughts, relying instead on ambiguous language. Most notably, Nick writes, “I’m inclined to reserve all judgments…. Reserving judgments is a matter of infinite hope” (Fitzgerald, 1-2). Given Nick’s language and first-person narration, Fitzgerald implies that Nick is an unreliable narrator.…
