Unlike The Underground Man, this novel is narrated by Nick Carraway, another character in the novel, and the readers feel the emotions that Gatsby is experiencing through him. Nick explains that Mr. Gatsby lives in the West Egg which is inhibited by those of “new money” and that the house to the right of his house “was Gatsby’s mansion… [but he] didn’t know Mr. Gatsby” (Fitzgerald 5), but knew the name of the man who owned the house. Nick goes over to see and have dinner with his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom Buchanan who lives is East Egg which is the “old money.” When Nick returns home from dinner, he sees Gatsby standing on his dock “stretch[ing] out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way” (Fitzgerald 20), but Nick only sees a blinking green light at the other end. This symbolizes that Gatsby is hopeful. Nick notices that Gatsby throws these wonderful extravagant parties where the music is blasted and everyone is just enjoying themselves. Nick finally receives an invitation, so he attends the party. Nick and Jordan, a friend of Daisy, are together through most of the night and they overhear people talking about who Gatsby might be, and hear talk that he never attends his parties. The readers notice that the Underground Man is lonely and lives in solidarity. Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby does not give off the impression that he is lonely since he throws these amazing parties, but he really is. Only three people attend Gatsby’s funeral, and this just give us a better reason to say that no matter how much money one has it does not change the fact that he or she could be lonely. This is where we can say the Underground Man and Gatsby are similar. The readers definitely see the emotional state that the Underground Man is going through because he is narrating his own actions. The Underground Man’s actions in Part 1 are due to what he experienced in Part 2, which hurts himself because he thinks about how society is all the same due to his experiences. Since Nick is the narrator in The Great Gatsby the readers do not completely sense all of the feeling Gatsby is going through, only the actions Nick narrators to us. The readers even learn after Gatsby is dead, that is real name is Jay Gatz, so he completely left his past in hopes of a better future.
