This cliché statement is proved wrong throughout the novel. In The Great Gatsby, many of the relationships have been destroyed and money cannot fix them. Money may be the reason for the destruction of the relationships. Daisy and Tom have relationship issues. Tom has a mistress which he speaks to in front of Daisy. Jordan tells Nick, “Neither of them can stand the person they are married to” (Fitzgerald 39). This is a recurring battle for Tom and Daisy. They are together yet they do not love one another. When Daisy is introduced to Gatsby she seems the happiest she has been. He sings, kisses, and smiles. The novel also mentions that Daisy did not date Gastby before because he did not have money. Therefore, Daisy sacrificed her feelings when she began her relationship with Tom. Poor relationships seems to reoccur in the novel. At Gatsby 's parties the spouses argue. This seems to occur at the end of the night when people have had plenty to drink. “Most of the remaining women were now having fights with men said to be their husbands” (Fitzgerald 62). Generally, at parties people do not argue in public. Especially an extensive amount of people. Also, most people at Gatsby’s parties are wealthy. Therefore, there may be a parallel between wealth and arguing with spouse. Hence, supporting the idea that wealth does not buy happiness in relationships. The green light from Daisy’s dock symbolizes Gatsby 's loves for Daisy. Gatsby tells Daisy, “You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock” (Fitzgerald 111). The green light is the connection that always existed between Gatsby and Daisy. Green represents “Green is the color of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has a strong emotional correspondence with safety. Dark green is also commonly associated with money.” (“Color Wheel Pro-See Color Theory in Action”) Fitzgerald chooses green because it showed Gatsby’s strong love for Daisy. It also shows the regrowth of their relationship, it being a new, as in fresh, relationship. The dark green symbolizes wealth, which seems to be a factor for who Daisy chooses as her spouse.
