F. Scott Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896, in St. Paul Minnesota. His father opened a wicker furniture business which unfortunately failed. His father then took a job as a salesmen for Procter & Gamble. His job caused his family to move back and forth between Buffalo and Syracuse, NY. When Fitzgerald became 12 years old, his family returned to St. Paul, MN where he attended the St. Paul Academy and wrote a detective story in the school newspaper (University of South Carolina); this is where his the very beginning of his writing career began.
After his years at the St. Paul Academy, he attended the Newman School, a catholic prep school in New Jersey. At prep school, he met Father Sigourney Fay who, upon discovering is talent at writing, encouraged him to pursue his “literary ambitions” (Editors).
Graduating in the Class of 1913, he then attended Princeton University to further pursue his literary career. While making a name for himself by writing for various school programs such as: writing scripts for Princeton’s Triangle Club musicals, articles for the Princeton Tiger humor magazine, and stories for the Nassau

It’s here in Valescure, France where Fitzgerald wrote his most popular novel The Great Gatsby. Although his book was well written, it didn’t achieve its highest glory until the 1950’s and 60’s, long after his death. Fitzgerald died an alcoholic because he was trying to stay relevant after the semi-success of The Great Gatsby. His wife, on the other hand, was suffering from mental issues up until her final mental breakdown and began treatment at the Sheppard Pratt Hospital in Towson, Maryland (Editors).
