John 3: 1-14 Summary

Much of the New Testament is filled with Narratives; narratives of the life of Jesus along with many practical teachings that can be applied to daily life. John 3:1-15 includes a discussion between Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews, and Jesus. This story alone is very practical because Nicodemus is shown coming up to Jesus with many questions that he wants answers to. On the other hand, the book of Ezekiel 37, to which I will be comparing with John 3, is a book of the major prophets. Prophecy is when a prophet, in this case Jesus, is communicating a message that has been sent to Him through God. The story found especially in Ezekiel 37: 1-14 is communicating an undeniable message that, as believers, is very crucial to our faith. Let’s focus only on John 3:1-15. Jesus told Nicodemus said that one has to be “born again”. Once Nicodemus heard what Jesus had said about this, he was confused. He thought that there was no way that a fully grown man, like himself, could be literally born again through his mother’s womb. But, Jesus had a perfect answer. He explained to Nicodemus that he is not talking of a physical birth, but a spiritual one; through water and Spirit. Spirit gives birth to Spirit and the wind blows wherever it pleases. In order to be born again, you have to be once dead in your sin, which is how everyone is born. Both John 3:1-15 and Ezekiel 37:1-14 are discussing this concept, but the word “regeneration” is not plainly stated; it’s implied.
