The operation of iron sulfide (pyrite and pyrrhotite) quarrying in Brukunga mine occurred between 1955 and 1972 (PIRSA, 2005). The manufacture of sulfuric acid in fertiliser industry caused the production of superphosphate fertilisers. The sponsorship from the state and federal government for the development of the mine provided employment and self-authority in local agriculture. During the operation, 5.5Mt of iron sulfide, 8Mt waste rocks and 3.5 tailings were produced.…

The ecocolumn being a smaller scale of the real thing, the presence of biotic components is low compared to a real life ecosystem which would contain various different types of flora and fauna. The lab requires us to measure the pH level to see how acidic or alkaline the water is on a scale of 0-14. Lastly certain variables such as room temperature and human changes need to be controlled. The Birds Nest aquifer area that has less than 10,000 mg/L TDS can be used in the future as a salt water disposal zone as long as an Aquifer Exemption is approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA Region 8 has jurisdiction over this area of permitting salt water disposal wells. “Wastewater injected into disposal wells may, in some circumstances, migrate to the surface or into freshwater aquifers” (Johnston, J, et. al, 2016). In the Birds Nest aquifer, the concern according to the UGS Special Study 147 (2013) are the gilsonite veins which can be inches in size to feet in size, fractures of the shale rock in the area, and the possibility of earthquakes due to underground…

This leads to a harmful effect on ecosystems and their balance of life (Linlin, Chen, 2012). The pH levels of aquatic environments are important because it affects the physiology of animals by changing their behaviors. The ion concentrations associated with the water and the organism’s survival can also be affected (Mahassen, El-Deeb Ghaxy, 2011).…

Discussion The aim of this experimental report was to analyse and examine several water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen, water temperature and turbidity, in order to determine the overall state of health within Freshwater creek. Once the results from each parameter were collected, from both locations, it was that found they each had multiple interrelationships between each other as well as several anomalies which could have potentially skewed the final results. It was initially decided at the beginning of the dissolved oxygen experimentation that a reading would be collected from two locations with different features, in order to present a representation of the specific amounts of dissolved oxygen in different areas. It was evident…
