Introduction:
In the nursing occupation, there are certain divergent issues which impact on the work of nursing leaders and managers which must be addressed. Similar to other professionals, nursing leaders and managers have designed collective visions and goals in addressing such issues. The fundamental approach under this view is that the best performing employees who made significant contribution to the organization are motivated by way of rewards while the underperforming employees will strive to achieve the same performance so that they also get the same rewards like their counterparts. In doing so, the nurse manager or leader assumes that by rewarding the best performers, the act, may spur the poor performers in their units to compete with their counterparts who are rewarded for best performance which would results in overall commitment and retention among the employees. The theory of transactional leadership lends credence to this belief as it states if leaders expects to impact improvement and commitments of their staff members, then they must apply the methods which recognize and rewards achievements and good performers in an organization (Gilitane, 2013). The theory emphasizes more on the powers of the leader or manager and asserts that under weak leadership, quality is diminished and thus followers must be alive to the fact of the consequences of the powers that the leader or manager has in his possession for rewarding good results (Gilitane, 2013). This approach is suited for my personal leadership style based on two perspectives. The first perspective concerns the observation that the nurses are humans and they too need both personal attention as well as their professional needs. When the leaders interact with the nurses on a personal basis, they understand them better and can provide them with the support that they need. This will make the nurses understand that the leaders and the organization in general care for them.
