Do well on a spelling quiz, get a gold star. While these extrinsic motivators may seem like a good idea they are not helpful in the long run. Nobody ever developed a passion for something because of an extrinsic motivation. In fact extrinsic motivations make people feel manipulated. Rewards and punishment don’t foster deep learning. Deep learning must be internally motivated. Extrinsic motivators can cause a person to lose interest. Giving gold stars in kindergarten. Extrinsic motivators make students feel like they have no control over their education. People must find extrinsic motivators or else they are doomed to be strategic learners. Schools ruins childhood curiosity. School is seen as a game that is played to win. Deep learners appreciate substantial feedback. They have a superficial knowledge. They expect to be able to answer new questions with the same strategies they’ve always used. They never learn how to adjust to new problems. Instead of seeing it as a learning opportunity they get frustrated by them. Deep learners have the ability and attitude to tackle the unknown confidently. They understand that even if they fail it’s still a learning experience and something good can come from it. They can adapt better than strategic learners. They invent new ways to overcome. Society needs adoptive experts.
For some students being a strategic students is a means of survival. College is expensive many students work 2 to 3 jobs just to be able to afford it. It is simply not feasible to do everything so they cut corners. They do exactly what is assigned and no more. They don’t have the freedom to get bad grades.
