The Rookie
The first movie that I will go over is called “The Rookie.” This movie is about a young boy named Jim Morris, who loves baseball. In the movie, we learn that Jim spends quite a bit of time practicing alone just throwing a baseball at a fence. This repetitive practicing displays intrinsic motivation, which is defined as “motivation that comes from within the individual.” This motivation from within can also be called “love for the game.” Jim played in little leagues when he was young. After one of his games where he had a good performance, he went to his father’s work, and told him “I had a good game. He told them what that means to him is that they “gave up.” This type of pep talk points out the ingredient that was lacking. He then talked to them about “chasing their dreams.” Coach Jim was then asked why he gave up on his dream. This conversation is what started the discussion about a bet. A bet was then made between the Coach and the team that if the team won districts, Coach Jim would try out again for the major leagues. This “extrinsic motivation” gave the team a whole new look. Extrinsic motivation refers to “motivation that comes from an external as opposed to an internal source.” After the bet was made, the team came together and started to win games. They even had a winning streak shortly after making the bet. This “extrinsic motivation” comes in many different forms. It isn’t just in the form of a bet. It can also come from trophies, money, and fame etc. In the film, we see how the coach always made pre-competition speeches to motivate his team.
