The Joker was the most self-aware villain of the Dark Knight trilogy. He was malicious to both villains and heroes and was also trying to make a philosophical statement about human nature. He wanted the people of Gotham to understand that deep down everyone is as evil and cruel as he is. He did things without remorse, without regret. He killed innocent people for no reason.…

Chris Sims himself writes, “Batman’s entire idea of Crime, his entire perception of what it means to break the rules set down by society, descends from exactly one moment: his parents’ murder.” (Sims). And I agree with this theory, because this is what makes the character an individual, with his personal reasons to be, who he is. This also shows, that some weaknesses can be developed into…

While Batman and Joker supposedly represent the entirely opposite traditional standards of good and evil respectively, both remain utterly alone and at odds with the populace regardless of their intent. Both characters hide their true identities, and possess significant detractors despite fighting for entirely different causes. At this point in the movie, a state of emergency, Batman is seen as a necessary protector of the city, and thus the publics sense of morality favors his actions. However, once the threat has passed and normalcy ensues, such a mindset is unlikely to continue, a fact The Joker points out. Herein lies an inherent sacrifice of living by unwavering ethics in a world dictated by…

Batman wants order in Gotham, while the Joker wants chaos. Batman appears sane and moral whereas the Joker is insane and morally deprived. Batman wants peace and the Joker craves conflict. While watching this movie, Batman starts to wonder if he actually wants peace and this poses the question; if Batman somewhere deep down, is he as insane as the Joker? This teachers us that the villain as an archetype means that none of us are really the hero. We all have dual sides and because of this, we are drawn to villains in any film, game or…

In the latter movie, the new antagonist, Bane, is rallying the escaped convicts by the promise of fair treatment and chaos acting out in their favor. The protector of the city, Batman, is unable to protect the people of the city and, as a result, the agents of chaos can take over and insume the city without fear of being stopped. The majority of the scene is presented through over the shoulder and close-up shots, therefore the audience will concentrate on Joker and Batman’s facial expressions. Although Batman was noticeably mad he remained calm, because he needed to know where Joker hid Harvey Dent and Rachel; in comparison, Joker was relaxed and excited, because he knew he was psychologically controlling the entire situation. In fact, he was playing around Batman’s mind by forcing him to break his own rule in order to save either Harvey or Rachel. Borrowing from psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus’ statement about Psychology, it can be said that “the Joker has a long past but a short history”. The lack of childhood history makes it difficult to fully understand and acknowledge the genesis of the character’s many faults and traits. However, we may just empathise with Alfred the Butler and show our agreement when he says, “Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with.…
