Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation Essay

Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are two very different concepts. Intrinsic motivation is like a natural drive in my opinion. You want to do the task you are doing because you enjoy it. While on the other hand, extrinsic motivation is drive to do a certain task because you will be getting something in return. You aren’t technically interested in what you are doing you just want what there is to gain from it. After reading about these two concepts the first thing that popped into my head is what role they play in the classroom. We should push what we teach to spark intrinsic motivation. I realize that that isn’t possible for every situation all the time but I believe teachers can do more to interest students to want to learn. An effective technic would be to use a students outside interests in your favor. Find ways to apply that specific interest to their learning experiences. I actually can recall learning about goal setting in elementary school and in my first year of college. Goal setting can be extremely helpful to anyone. Goal setting overall can improve performance IF you are setting appropriate goals. Learning the process of setting goals I think is something ALL children should be talked to about. Setting unreasonable goals and not being able to reach them can be harmful. Goals are a good way to fuel intrinsic motivation. I think regularly setting goals in your classroom would be a effective method. Meeting with students to discuss what they personally want to achieve can really create a positive environment. No matter what students will generally always be working towards something they want! Setting goals in your classroom is also an easy way to get parents involved in the classroom. In my opinion, if taught currently, goals are an all around great tool for teachers to use with
