Extraversion vs. Technology Usage
Technology has become a fundamental part of our society, it is impossible to ignore its impact on media, politics, and other aspects of our culture. A society without computers, tablets, laptops, etc. is completely foreign to most teenagers and young adults. Most people born after 1990 grew up in an era where the World Wide Web was in practical use. We are surrounded by technology on the daily basis, so it is only right to examine technology impact on extraversion. Technology has to have some type of impact on our personality because it is everywhere we turn. There has to be some correlation between technology usage and extraversion. Simply stated, levels of technology usage should depend on an individual’s level of extraversion. There is not a lot of research regarding technology usage and extraversion, simply due to the fact that the technology boom is relatively too new to make any major implications. Research regarding technology’s effect on society seems to be rising and there are a few studies that examine extraversion and technology usage. A study executed by Lemmings found that “Internet addicted versus nonaddicted groups” were vastly different in “level and type of psychopathology” (Essig, 2012). Lemming results didn’t necessarily show differences in extraversion due to technology, his results simply indicate that there were major differences in mental disorders due to technology. The higher someone is in extraversion the lower the tendency toward technology. The results indicate that young adults use technology to avoid social interaction, in essence, our study found that introverted people use technology as a crutch. This “crutch” is used in everyday life by numerous people, young and old, it is simply too easy to look at a phone, tablet, or computer screen rather than confront an awkward situation. This “crutch” is now an obstacle, it is being used at family dinner tables, restaurants, and numerous other places. The results fundamentally implicate a major hole in society caused by technology. I have made a strong inference about our society based on the results, but there were two flaws in our study. The hypothesis was definitely supported by our data and I am fairly confident in the results. Although I am fairly confident in our results, there are two sources of error that limits the accuracy of the hypothesis. The two major sources of error in our study were the sample and the fact that all the answers were yes/no. The sample was all college students from the same college which obviously do not accurately display society as and whole. Furthermore, the questions could have been answered better with a scale; a scale would have been a better way to score the questions and it would have been a better indicator of one’s
