The hype of extraterrestrial phenomenon has been long withheld, not only within western civilization but all over the world. There are several reasons as to why some truly believe that there has been past contact with otherworldly beings, but this is mostly unfounded information usually from unreliable sources. However, while some fanatics continue to cling to this belief, there have been modern advancements in both technological and psychological fields, proving that any sort of contact is improbable. Although the thought of meeting an alien race seems fascinating, it isn't ideal, and as the human race advances it is clear that any sort of contact would not go as many had hoped. History is full of these delusions; for example in 1806 near Leeds, England, people went into a hysteria when a bird started laying inscribed eggs that said “Christ is Coming.” It was later discovered that the eggs were written once laid and then forced back into the bird (Bartholomew). Delusions, while some spread from positivity and hopefulness, most are fear driven, and the thought of an outside, more powerful being is frightening to most. The fact that these beliefs of extraterrestrial beings later made their way into mass delusions seems somewhat inevitable. In a Harvard study on people who have long withheld tramas, it is questioned whether or not memories can be created so strongly that the person in question will get PTSD like symptoms. One of several patients is a man who claimed to be an alien abductee; he listened to a recording of how he was abducted, which in turn triggered psychological responses similar to that in combat veterans. The memory that this person believed however wasn’t true, it was something that their memory created from experiences and stories that they had previously heard (Neimark). The participants in this study who held false memories showed different characteristics than those who did not. The people who were affected by false memories in this study had a higher ability for fantasy and absorption than the normal person; this is the ability to become entranced or more often daydream (Neimark). People who are affected by false memories truly believe in something that never happened, this makes people with similar alien abduction tales unreliable without actual evidence.
