Are Extracurricular Activities Good for Students?
As kids get into high school, most parents hope that their kids will join some kind of club or team. A question parents might ask is, “How involved should kids be in extracurricular activities or should they even be involved at all?” Extracurricular activities can be both advantageous and unpromising depending on what the student plans on participating in and also how many activities the student plans participating in. Many studies have been conducted trying to find the answer to those questions. The amount of homework that students usually have on a daily basis can be overwhelming. “Those who participated in 10 extracurricular activities each week scored 4 percent lower on their grade average than other children and performed worse than peers who did not participate in extracurricular activities” (Reasons Why). The work that is put on the student for the activity can become too much for a teenager to handle. With that amount of work, it can lead to exhaustion and possibly depression. When kids are stressed out, it can put a strain on the dynamics of the house. The student will begin to close themselves off from their friends and family, which leads to them to becoming even more depressed. If that is not handled in time, it could lead to suicide attempts or death. Stress can also cause grades to dwindle, leaving them even more stressed than before. “Sports and music programs offered through schools may offer parents a reprieve by supplying equipment for students to use…”(What Are). If the student has chosen to participate in soccer, the family will have to buy cleats, shin guards, and a ball. Adding all those items together, it can be more than $50. Once the students grows out of those cleats and shin guards the family will have to buy another set of both. Football requires the rental of the uniforms and pads worn. On top of the rental of the pads and uniforms, the family also has to buy cleats. If the student would like to play in the band, they would have to pay for the instrument or the instrument rental. The cost of the mouth pieces are expensive. A Holton-Farkas, medium deep French Horn mouthpiece costs around $75. Woodwinds require pads for their instruments to be replaced regularly, which can range from $50-$100. When playing in the band, they will travel around the state and perform, which costs $1 per mile per bus. So if the band travels fifty miles with three buses, the band will have to pay $150 one way. If the student wants to march in their schools band they will have to pay for band camp, competitions, the cost to drive to football games every Friday, and driving to a competition or two every Saturday, marching shoes, bibs, gloves, helmets, plumes, jacket rental, another instrument rental,
