As ECMO utilization and patient acuity increases within the organization, Mayo Clinic aims to have an education platform that ensures staff confidence and proficiency in the management of the patient population. Research shows that ECMO emergencies, though infrequent, can lead to poor patient outcomes if inadequately identified, treated, or managed. These high risk low probability events are best replicated in a simulation format that allows for high fidelity scenarios to be produced in a real world like clinical setting. Currently, Mayo Clinic Rochester offers simulation training in the emergency management of ECMO patients to all provider specialties. Though all specialties are trained in the simulation environment, no simulation training is offered that mimics the multidisciplinary approach that is provided in true clinical emergencies.
