1. Internal validity is how clear the relationship is “among observed behaviors within a particular event” (Regan, 2013, p. 184). On the other hand, external validity is how “portable or generalizable” the inferences of the research are (Regan, 2013, p. 184). These two types of validities can intermingle and fluctuate in relationship to one another. External validity is more conducive to quantitative methods because it indicates a greater level of generalizability (Regan, 2013). The goal of quantitative research in most instances is to deduce a generalization about a particular sample from a larger population. Regan (2013) gives the example of a quantitative analysis of how effective DDR programs are in ensuring long-lasting peace.
