External Influences

Many outside forces can change a person’s life. These external influences can come in many forms as shown in the play : Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare which is about how the feud of the two rival noble families leads to the death of their children, the short stories Anointed with Oils by Alden Nowlan and The Landlady by Roald Dahl and finally it is shown in the novel To kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee Firstly, The play Romeo and Juliet shares important insight on how a person’s life is determined by external influences in its text. To start, a person's life can be influenced by family, this is shown when Lord Capulet, after having griefed over the loss of Tybalt and having been convinced by Paris makes Juliet marry Paris against …show more content…
Starting off, one's environment can change a person’s life. This is shown in the short story anointed with oil were Edith the protagonist changes herself from being from ‘the sticks’ to fit the city lifestyle like buying perfume, better clothes and changing her accent. This is an instance that proves that the environment can change a person’s life because Edith changes almost everything about her to suit the ‘city life’ that she always imagined living in the slums, living in her new environment made her adapt and learn more about the environment she lives in while trying to ignore her past and family thinking how embarrassing it is now after living in the city. In addition, another point is that the short story the Landlady by Roald Dahl describes how a person’s life can be determined by the external influences known as fate. This is shown specifically when Billy was about to walk away to look at The Bell and Dragon until he noticed a sign were “all at once his eye was caught and held in the most peculiar manner by a small notice...Each word was like a large black eye staring at him through the glass, holding him, compelling him, forcing him to stay where he was.”(Dahl 106-107). This piece of evidence helps demonstrates that people’s lives are influenced by fate because instead of actually leaving to check out the other place he could have stayed at which he knew that he would be more comfortable and had experienced living in before, he felt that he was compelled to look at this random B&B first with the result of Billy dying in the end. FInally, The Landlady teaches the readers that a person’s life can be determined by betrayal. This is shown during the climax of the landlady were Billy found out that the tea he was drinking was poisoned and that the landlady was actually a serial killer and Billy was his next target.

In the novel Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelson, there is a young boy named Cole Matthews, who is filled with anger because of the negative events he experienced through his life. Due to a brutal attack towards Peter Driscal, the Circle of Justice put Cole through the process of isolation on an island. Cole struggled to be submissive in the beginning, but in the end, he was a changed boy. I agree with Edwin’s statement because through different practices and acceptance of our own mistakes, we can achieve change.…

Pauline Hopkins is right when stating that surroundings influence our lives. If this wasn’t the case then a death would never make us sad and rain on a bad day wouldn’t mean anything. Everything has a result to it, just like everything can be represented a symbol. It just depends on how an author wants their character to portray that outcome or of that “symbol” is really a symbol at all. No matter what it is, with every cause there’s an effect.…

Whether one decides to believe in fate, destiny, free will, or anything else, one thing is always true: people make choices. Every day we make choices. They can be small ones, like choosing to tip five percent more at a restaurant or choosing to wear a green tie over a blue one. But many of the choices a person makes are larger than these, choosing a field to major in, or choosing a spouse, perhaps. Clearly, our choices are important because they determine our character and future, but they are also important because many, if not all, of our choices, directly affect others and the people around them.…

Newton’s third law of physics state that “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” This can be applied to the universal concept of change and indicates that all choices have rippling effects in life, which shape the consequences of change we experience, be it positive or negative. Ideas of these consequences vary as every individual’s experience throughout their life depends entirely upon their reaction, resulting from the context. Peter Goldsworthy’s novel Maestro expresses how the accumulation of experience, passing of time and growing up is inevitable. Similarly, Peter Howitt’s film Sliding Doors conveys that many factors, regardless of how important or not they may seem, all contribute to change and its outcomes.…

In most times, when a person is asked about the development of one’s character, one would respond by relating their characters with life experiences. Character develops through the entire life, and each situation comes with a lesson. Family, friends and peers, among others, are external forces that shape a person’s character. However, according to Malcolm Gladwell in his essay, the streets we walk in have as much effect on a person’s character as well. Gladwell reviews aspects of people’s behavior development, how and what shapes their character.…

In the romantic novel of Romeo and Juliet, the controversy about the true protagonist remains an enigma. In spite of that, Juliet it is evidently seen to be the true protagonist. This is seen as most of the story revolves around Juliet and her family, Juliet’s character develops throughout the story, and the plot is affected by most of the verdicts Juliet forms. Over the course of the story, it can be contemplated that most of the story pivots around Juliet and the Capulet family. Not much is known about the Montague’s, this is proven by the quantity of members belonging to the Montague family correlated to the Capulets ; in the Montague household there are 4 members, although there are 5 members in the Capulet household.…

Direct and Indirect Influence First of all, some dictionaries defined influence as “the power to change or affect someone or something”. We all know that influences always have consequences, so when we want to change something, we need to understand that it may have an impact on people’s lives. We all humans are different, so we might think similar, but we make different choices, and a clear example of this is my family. For instance, my brothers and I were raised in the same house and our parents influenced all of us in the same way however, each one of us took a different decision in how we wanted to live. Normally, there are two types of influences, which are direct and indirect, and these influences impact people’s lives because both have…

In “The Landlady”, Billy Weaver is lured into a seemingly normal bed and breakfast by an old lady who, despite her gentle and unthreatening appearance, wants to kill him. It is a story about how those with cruel intent may take advantage of those who are innocent and naive. Although the book and the movie can be arguably similar if generalized, there are many differences that may change the way a reader/viewer may grasp the concept of the story. Since a movie and book cannot be exactly the same, the film version is bound to have things that differ from the text. One example of how the book develops the development of the story is with the setting.…
