Character Analysis: Smashed By Lisa Ludeke

Smashed, written by Lisa Ludeke, is a fictional young adult novel which follows field hockey senior captain and student Katie Martin, and her struggle to maintain a sports scholarship to the University of Maine all while dealing with a troublesome student. During the novel, Katie experiences many external and interal conflicts with herself, her mother, her friends, her coach, and other classmates. Even though there are many other conflicts presented throughout the book, Katie’s main conflict is with another student named Alec Osborne.
Alec Osborne, who is also a high school senior along with Katie Martin, is the epitome of the typical tall, attractive, popular playboy that all the girls wanted to date and every guy wanted to be. He is the captain of various clubs and sports such as the football

In the text it states, “Alec! Adrenaline rushed through me and I jerked away quickly, making for the door, but Alec stood up, jumped in front of me, and blocked my way….We could’ve had a great time, Martini. Why did you have to f--- it all up….I told you, Alec I’m sorry about the accident. I really am . I wish it had never happened” (Ludeke 260). It is clear that Alec had some resentment towards Katie after the accident, and felt as if he should get some kind of revenge. Katie is aware that Alec is upset with her, but now being just her and Alec alone inside a room without any escape Katie is forced to confront Alec.
In conclusion, Alec has been the cause of most of Katie’s problems. Ever since he came into her life, he had cause trouble in Katie’s life. She lost her scholarship, she got rejected from her dream college, and she is now traumatized because of what Alec had done to her. Even though Katie still did not confess that she was in fact the driver of that car, all the events that occured throughout the novel between she and Alec is bottled up inside her therefore leaving her
