Extending School Hours Essay

Dickenson County School Board is planning on adding one and a half hours to school each day. I one-hundred percent disagree with the decision of extending the school day. Students already have to go roughly eight hours every single week day. Expanding the school day will cause students and staff to become restless and likewise, it can cause them to do poorly on school work. Furthermore, it can cause them to become stressed due to having to worry about more assignments. Also, extending the day will make it more difficult for teachers and students to participate in extracurricular activities and be social. Overall, I believe adding more hours to school will result in more negative effects on both the staff members and the students.

First of all, I strongly disagree with the decision of adding one and a half hours to school because it will cause students and teachers to become fatigued. For instance, if the school day is extended, students will start to lose focus on important tasks and their only intention will be to try and not fall asleep. They will not get any work finished, which leads to their grades plummeting. Moreover, the one and a half hour will cause teachers to become worn out and that can result in them becoming agitated. After school lets out , they will have to go home and complete any unfinished work, then they will have to prepare for the next day of school. Afterwards, it will already be time to go to sleep. Students will not have time to participate in any sports or clubs, due to this extension. In other words, school will rule their lives. Similarly, staff members will not have time to take part in any hobbies or clubs. Increasing the school day will have absolutely zero positive effects on the students and

School times can sometimes be absurdly early, but because of later start times some problems stir up. Later school start times can increase grades and the well being of the kids, but the downfall of that is that schools have to pay extra for more buses because usually a district only has a few busses, which then makes the school start times staggered. Although the wellbeing of kids is far more important. The idea of staggering school time is smart but if its hurting the health of people I would pay the extra money to keep kids safe. The first reason that school should start later is because it will allow kids to be more well rested and makes it easier to focus.…

The Mill Valley High School Board members should reject the proposed idea of a later school day because it is beneficial to students with after school activities such as sports and jobs. The idea that a later school day is beneficial towards students is preposterous because students with after school activities and jobs would need to be out of school at an earlier hour. Take John Sherwood’s testimony for example. He complains, “But it’s going to make football practice a nightmare. We won’t be able to be dressed and on the field until 4:45, and in October, it starts getting dark by 5:30...…

Schools barely have enough time to teach kids what they need to know for standardized tests. Rahm Emmanuel, the mayor of Chicago and a supporter of longer school days, said in an interview that because schools don’t have time, “students [essentially] have to pick between social studies versus science; math versus music; reading versus recess." (Schaper, 2012) At least one extra month of school would leave the door open to a lot of learning possibilities. Kids leave grade school and are not prepared for what is ahead of them.…
