Many stakeholders are affected, but it seems that the most crucial stakeholder, the students, are not always taken into consideration. In chapter 10 of Reconceptualizing Curriculum Development, a group of teachers discuss their frustrations with standardized assessments they are forced to give their students. They watch students struggle with the assessments and know that those in charge of creating these assessments do not see what the teachers see everyday. However, Henderson (2014) discusses how teachers can be “lead learners” and begin showing leadership in their classrooms and beyond, by finding joy in their practices and developing relationships with their students. Through my coursework, I have learned about how building a teacher leadership project can positively impact my students, and allow me the opportunity to collaborate with others. Each of the five commonplaces is addressed in my leadership plan. First and foremost the learners are the most important commonplace in my plan. There would no point in conducting this project if it were not for the students and my motivation for wanting students to learn their best. Teachers will be addressed in my plan because as part of my leadership project, I want to collaborate with other teachers in my building such as my grade level team, other reading teachers and special education teachers in my building. I want to invite them to also be my critical friends and hold me accountable to the goals I have set for my students and myself and make sure my data is justified. The context of the curriculum will be examined and applied to my student’s individual needs. The subject matter will heavily emphasized as I am teaching reading comprehension strategies, which is a skill heavily emphasized the Common Core State Standards and the Indiana State Standards. Curriculum making is a huge component of this project. Curriculum making is developing positive changes in order to enhance the curriculum (Alvior, 2015).
