Extending Leadership Beyond the Classroom In order to extend my teacher leadership outside the classroom, I might begin my working with other special education colleagues, grade level team or working with the other reading teacher in my building. I would start by possibly presenting my research plan at a PLC meeting and asking other teachers’ thoughts or seeing if they would like to help by either collaborating with me or being a critical friend as I work through the research. From there, when I complete the research I can present findings to my administrator and then maybe at an all school faculty meeting, and I can have teachers apply the findings to their own disciplines. At some point, I will also be presenting the findings at a Bellarmine …show more content…
Many stakeholders are affected, but it seems that the most crucial stakeholder, the students, are not always taken into consideration. In chapter 10 of Reconceptualizing Curriculum Development, a group of teachers discuss their frustrations with standardized assessments they are forced to give their students. They watch students struggle with the assessments and know that those in charge of creating these assessments do not see what the teachers see everyday. However, Henderson (2014) discusses how teachers can be “lead learners” and begin showing leadership in their classrooms and beyond, by finding joy in their practices and developing relationships with their students. Through my coursework, I have learned about how building a teacher leadership project can positively impact my students, and allow me the opportunity to collaborate with others. The results of my project could be communicated to various stakeholders and thus working towards creating a positive impact in the …show more content…
Each of the five commonplaces is addressed in my leadership plan. First and foremost the learners are the most important commonplace in my plan. There would no point in conducting this project if it were not for the students and my motivation for wanting students to learn their best. Teachers will be addressed in my plan because as part of my leadership project, I want to collaborate with other teachers in my building such as my grade level team, other reading teachers and special education teachers in my building. I want to invite them to also be my critical friends and hold me accountable to the goals I have set for my students and myself and make sure my data is justified. The context of the curriculum will be examined and applied to my student’s individual needs. The subject matter will heavily emphasized as I am teaching reading comprehension strategies, which is a skill heavily emphasized the Common Core State Standards and the Indiana State Standards. Curriculum making is a huge component of this project. Curriculum making is developing positive changes in order to enhance the curriculum (Alvior, 2015). The point of the leadership project is to promote positive change in the curriculum. I would love to help the field of special education find new ways to provide intervention for struggling

Student learning is more data driven and administrators have more workloads and responsibilities. The article addressed the problem with school leaders managing funding and policy changes. The need for shared leadership among teachers and staff is increasing do to the lack of time allowed for the administration to focus solely on data driven learning. Allowing collaboration among colleagues such as PLCs, RTI, and classroom teachers using administrative directed protocol can promote an acceptance of changes because all parties have the opportunity to analyze the data and discuss where the need for change is necessary.…

I see now that education leaders are held accountable and are uniquely responsible for developing and implementing a vision of learning in order to guide decisions and actions. As a leader, I will be charged to guide a process for developing and revising a shared vision, a strong mission, and comprehensive goals that are not just appropriate but…

While analyzing the required text for this week there were five ethical categories that reoccurred through each document: responsibilities to parents, collaboration, community, personal development, and students. In addition, there are other categories, but these are the most significant to me. I moved from Florida to Massachusetts and began studying Biomedical Engineering at Wheaton College, primarily because my father thought that would be “a cool thing to study.” I was unsure of myself and unhappy with my major, and seemed to have no goals for my future career. When I thought about my future, my thoughts fell along the lines of, “I’m going to get a degree in ‘insert amazing major here’, and then a job in that ‘insert amazing field here’”.…

My leadership philosophy is one that is rooted in the strong belief that it must be a continuous quest to motivate all students to become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and lifelong learners, while possessing outstanding character. This includes assisting students with discovering their talents and interests, therefore developing a love of learning, while developing into ethical, productive citizens. Accomplishing this requires a leader who is knowledgeable in pedagogy and curriculum, including the use of data and current assessments to enhance instruction, and who possesses outstanding communication skills, the ability to manage an operation’s resources effectively, promotes collaboration and teamwork, and is passionate and committed to helping students learn. I believe that my interpersonal skills will be my biggest strength as an educational leader. Through frequent, honest communication, and my enthusiasm for the subject, I will demonstrate understanding and compassion for those around me, therefore building trusting relationships.…

Leaders must know how to listen with empathy, engage in deep conversation, and talk about things that are connected to the future (Senge, 2008). To move teams forward, leaders must test assumptions to ensure the past does not repeat itself. Research shows the positive impact a collaborative culture has on the change process in a school and the indirect effect it has on student achievement (Hollinger & Heck, 2010). Franklin Covey Education has a dynamic school change movement titled, The Leader in Me.…
