An evaluation for a child that is in risk of being placed in the Autism Spectrum starts off with gathering a case history of the child. The case history should include if they have had any medical problems, developmental history such as when they first walked, first word, and when or if they have met major speech milestones, and any drastic changes in their behavior. You would also want to look into if there is a history of any mental illnesses in the family that could have possibly been passed onto the child. Their expressive language which includes their production of speech sounds and also their nonverbal communication skills. Their literacy skills will also be tested to determine how well they can read and comprehend what they read. A Speech Language Pathologist will also obtain a language sample. This will help them determine the child pragmatic skills such as eye contact, being able to initiate communication, turn taking, and use of body language and facial expressions. This will also help determine the fluency of the child by whether their speech is well paced or choppy and broken up.
