In Nathaniel’s Hawthorn’s short story, “Young Goodman Brown”, directs us that Hawthorn intended this to be an allegory. When pulling out and emphasizing on the main ideas, American religion and hypocrisy is pulled out. Behind this idea, curiosity plays a major role in Goodman’s actions which is followed by the effects and Goodman’s mental state. I believe this is an absolute perfect example of psychological explotation of paranoia that is exposed by the usage of symbolism, temptation, and curiosity which are human characteristics that one can imply everyday. Throughout all the events that I will mention, there’s two things that Goodman has in his head that play a role in his deicsion making and thought process, faith and family.
There’s no hardcore evidence that makes Goodman’s journey realistic, but leads us to think this was all a dream. There is no physical conflict here meaning it would be an internal conflict. Young Goodman Brown will live in fear and discomfort with everybody for the rest of his life. I feel that through these events, this opened new doors to Goodman Brown, grew a new perpesctive, and his rotified his view towards society. He can’t trust no one, not even his Faith. For the rest of his life he will live in misery thinking everyone is evil and that everyone is trying to drag him down to hell. Instead of seeing the good and encouraging positivism, it’s the opposite. Goodman Brown is unforgiving, sees the hypocrisy within the people and is living with insecurity. But wait, doesn’t this make Goodman Brown the hypocrite? Society will view him as this negative old influence in society only wishing and digging out the bad within people. Not even faith and family will chanhe his mindset. Not even Satan
