Explosion: A Constellation In Greek Myth

Improved Essays
The constellation I have chosen is found on the celestial equator, and is one of the most recognisable constellations in the world; Orion, named after a hunter in Greek mythology. Orion is made up of seven main stars that make something of an 'hourglass' shape, with four stars making a rectangle-like shape; Betelgeuse and Bellatrix making up his 'shoulders', and Saiph and Rigel making up his 'feet'. This rectangle is then tethered in at the middle by three stars to finish off the hourglass shape and act as Orion's 'belt'; these stars are named Mintaka, Alnilam and Alnitak. There are of course other stars that make up other aspects such as a sword, a shield, a club, and his head, but these are often too faint to see by eyesight alone and often …show more content…
According to Greek mythology, Orion was a hunter of incredible size and skill. It was said that he became boastful of his abilities to kill any and all beasts on earth while talking to the Goddess Artemis (though in other versions he is said to have overindulged in wine and forced himself on her, which lead to his demise), and while boasting was overheard by the Goddess Gaia, who was mother to all creatures. Gaia became enraged at Orion and his bloodlust for her charges, and decided to send a small scorpion. With Orion's size, strength and weapons useless, the scorpion was able to sneak up and sting him to death. When Orion dies Zeus puts both he and the scorpion on opposite sides of the sky so that they will never have to meet again. That is supposedly the reason you can't see Orion and Scorpio in the sky at the same …show more content…
However, after I had read all of the stories there were to read about them, I liked to make up my own stories about these people and creatures and objects, so famed that their tales were written in the stars. So, here's a version of Orion's story some 15 years in the telling! I hope you enjoy.

--Orion was a strong and fearless hunter, known throughout the lands for his skill and prowess. He had hunted down beasts that were ravaging kingdoms, and brought prized feasts in front of kings. It was for one of these acts of gallantry that a king chose to thank Orion by putting on a grand hunt in his honour. The winner would be the hunter that could bring in the best deer in the forest for the King's banquet that night.

As Orion readied himself for the hunt, he boasted to his wife and those nearby of his extensive experience and success in such feats. However the Earth Goddess Gaia had overheard his gloating remarks and found his pride at killing her creatures contemptible, and vowed to teach him a lesson. Once Orion had set off into the forest with the other hunters, Gaia began. She snuck up behind Orion's wife and turned her into a strong, elegant doe. Now being of a frightful nature, Orion's wife darted into the covering of the first

Eighteenth and 19th century technologies transformed the way in which the night sky was observed and led to the discovery of celestial wonders, from stars, galaxies, meteors, moons, planets, comets to nebula. The result was, in part, the creation of celestial maps that showed an exponential number of stars in the heavens, adding to the awe of a sphere that is millions of miles away and beautiful beyond compare. Star atlases became a way of conveying information about the heavens, and Elijah H. Burritt's, "The Geography of the Heavens, 1856 (Cover-title: Atlas designed to illustrate Burritt's Geography of the Heavens), edited by Hiram Mattison and first published in 1833, is a 6-chart atlas that illustrates the mapping of the stars and features the constellations prominently and in great detail. There were several editions after and thousands of copies in print sold over a generation to meet the demand for this popular book.…

Many ancient civilizations worshipped the sun, stars, and the moon, believing it would bring them closer to their gods. In Assyrian and Babylonian civilizations, they gazed up into the sky each night and recorded what they saw. They realized that the stars orbited in the same way each night. “They soon learnt to recognize those that seemed fixed to the vault of heaven, reappearing each night in the same place. And they saw shapes in the constellations and gave them names” (Gombrich, 20).…

Some of the most imposing figures in the constellation are the bodies that make up the asterism the Northern Cross (and in the case of Deneb, one third of the Summer Triangle). Although Cygnus itself is sometimes referred to as the Northern Cross, much like Crux in the south is known as the Southern Cross, the constellations actually contain more stars than those forming the asterisms: the Northern Cross follows Cygnus’ shape, but appears as if the swan has had its wings ‘clipped’, as it were. More distinct, and larger than its southern counterpart by far, the Northern Cross is pieced together from five major stars: Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma and Epsilon Cygni, otherwise known as Deneb, Albireo, Rukh, Sadr and Gienah,…

I looked up at the night sky and thought of the stories he used to tell about the stars, the constellations, and it seemed sad that I couldn’t remember a single one of them. There’s a string of stars called Orion’s Belt, and I think Orion is known as a hunter, but I’m not sure of what. It’s funny to think that, because in a way I’m a hunter, too, only I hunt pokemon. I don’t hunt them in a harmful way, I hunt them to capture them in a device called a pokeball. A pokeball is a like a little housing unit that stores the pokemon safely inside and protects them from the outside world when they aren’t outside.…

Their differences are everything from the fact that Ares is the god of war and Athena is the god of wisdom. Ares enjoys chaos, whereas Athena generally enjoys peace Ares would rather settle a dispute with fighting, whereas Athena would rather settle one through force of will. With Ares if you are around him he is always discussing some topic related to warfare and killing.…
