From birth and throughout most of our lives our mothers and fathers are the main ones who influence our behavior and actions. The opinions of others are taken into consideration and this changes how we may act. The stress of homework and drama leads to inadequate amounts of sleep, the stares of others influences the need to not break off from what is considered “normal,” and the consequences of all words and actions are more severe. Although we are still unique and our own person we always at least subconsciously change what we do to conform to the pressures of society. If a group of people hates something then other people feel the need to also dislike it so as to not be targeted themselves because they are indirectly supporting what others hate. People may choose whether or not they want to subject themselves to the consequences of voicing their opinions but either way they will always conform in one way or another. The story “The Lottery” written in 1948 by Shirley Jackson shows many examples of how Tessi decides to voice her opposition to the “Lottery” and not only do the complete strangers ignore her pleads but her family also quickly turns on her when they realize it is pointless to defend someone who will meet their end whether they want it to happen or not. Humans spend their entire lives engulfed in their own thoughts whether positive or negative and formulate their own opinions and decide on their actions. The desires such as love, greed, and other desires influence what is done in many ways. Sergei, a main character in the story, uses two of his wishes to solve the unsolvable problems of others out of love. When faced with his final decision of whether or not to accept being alone for the rest of his life or live with the ever present guilt of having murdered someone. His desire to not be alone cause him to consider getting away with murder which is a very powerfully evil thought and action. These desires and thoughts that we have can influence us to do almost anything ranging from dedicating our lives to being good to others or even murderous
