Ethical Dilemma In School

An Ethical Dilemma is the situation where a person must choose between two rights. It can be hard for a person to choose between one choice or the other, especially when they're values began to fight over the options. Ultimately though a person must decide what they think is the higher right. An example of this would be as follows: A teacher has a student who is struggling to get good grades in her class because he is always out working to support his impoverished family. He will likely fail the course if he doesn’t pass his final exam. Knowing of his current situation, should the teacher give the student some extra points so he can pass his exam? This situation would be considered an ethical dilemma as both choices the teacher must make are right, giving the points would be the morally right thing to do, but giving this student points and not to the rest of the classes would be unfair. Ends-based thinking focuses the consequences of your choices and which will create the greatest good for the greatest number. In our dilemma, giving the boy the extra points might lead to him having a more prosperous future, allowing him to better support his family. Rule-based thinking makes a person create a rule-based around their ethical dilemma. A rule the teacher might come up with in her ethical dilemma is that if a student is struggling in class, she will award them with extra points when she sees fit.
