Exploratory activities in a kindergarten classroom include learning center activities and outdoor activities. Learning centers should be set up to encourage conversation. The four stages are: Birth – two years - sensorimotor stage, two years to seven years – preoperational stage, seven years to eleven years – concrete operational stage, and eleven years to fifteen years – formal operational stage. This paper will address a classroom designed to benefit the development of toddlers who are in the preoperational stage (Lefrancois, 2012). Children in the early preoperational stage are extremely egocentric; that is they are unable to think about things from any point of view but their own (McLeod, 2010). Toddlers believe that everyone else sees, feels, and thinks the exact same way as they do.…

The Dooly County School System has a motto that they’ve been saying for four years now. Their motto is “There’s a Graduate in Every Bobcat that is both College and Career Ready.” (http://dooly.dchs.schooldesk.net/). For a school that embraces a motto such as that, people of the community should feel comfortable knowing that their kids will be successful adults after high school, but as a graduate from the Dooly County School System, I question that motto. If we do an analysis of the Dooly County school system using activity theory, we can see that the school is lacking the tools necessary for the development of college and career ready students.…

The other preschool classroom I observed was the Desert Vista High School Early Learning Center. The indoor environment of their classroom is smaller than my dream classroom but there is many different places for the children and students to play with toys, games and sing silly songs. Their indoor environment is very energetic because of the places and things that the children can play and do in the classroom with their classmates and teachers which is important because they want the children to have fun and feel safe. The outside environment is very cool because the children are able to do what they want and play and run off some energy but they are also able to play some pretty cool games with other children. There daily schedule is very simple because…

The adults are imperative in facilitating physical and intellectual activities. Some educators might set up the environment rich in experience and materials that are interesting to the child and observe and respond accordingly. Some say it is not merely enough to put some new toys on the floor but rather talk about them and model the exploration. The educator might provide authentic learning environments that are interesting and challenging for the stage of the child. A full-day in a kindergarten classroom includes breakfast, a morning and afternoon snack, and lunch for each student. The teachers provided the students with a variety of engaging learning experiences and hands-on materials. Those materials included books, writing materials, math-related games and manipulatives, art materials, props for dramatic play, and blocks. Students use computers within the class. It was described to me that the materials are chosen for how well they support the overall curriculum and goals they have for the students.…

In the Pre-K classroom that I observed it consisted of several different centers for the children to participate in, such as: block area, dramatic play, art, library, sand/water table, music/movement, sensory area, finger painting, play dough, and the students got the opportunity to make their own snacks. Not only did the students get to participate in centers, they had the opportunity each day to go outside and play on the playground as well as having an interactive lecture every morning at circle time and when the students sat down at their tables to do their daily worksheet. I believe that the Pre-K class I observed was a mix between traditional teaching as well as constructivism, creating a balance between the two. In the morning during circle time, the teacher would “lecture” the students with the letter of the day, go over the date, months, days of the week, shapes, and the numbers up to the date it currently was.…

As hands-on exploration imposts learning, teachers pay great attention to minor details such as texture and colour to gain student’s interest. Documentation also plays an important role in this approach. Documentations such as children’s artwork, writing, and objects collected from class outings are displayed. In a Montessori, children are given the choice to select pre-prepared activities, work independently or to employ movement.…
