Internet Censorship Essay

When some people think of the internet, they think of freedom. The freedom of sharing and receiving information, the freedom of expression, and the freedom of speech are all exercised on the web. With all this, one couldn’t expect such a place to be neat and clean. If content isn’t meant for someone under the age of 18, the parents of that minor should be monitoring what they’re viewing. If content is illegal, there are laws set in place to prohibit and punish those who break them. It shouldn’t be a surprise that some people abuse their privilege of the internet, and not everyone should deal with the consequences brought due to these individuals. In the opinion of some, the government already has enough restraints put in place on the internet, …show more content…
The most respected is more than likely the freedom of speech, the first amendment of our constitution. Despite this, the United States is now one of the highest in using censorship and surveillance. Censorship is the official examination of things. Surveillance is the close observation of something. These terms are both seen when thinking about how the government watches us. Our government watches the average Internet user’s activities. Many people have the opinion that unless there is probable cause, there is no reason for observing at such a frequent rate. Random spot checks are understandable. Moreover, the government should not be watching innocent internet users with such intensity. Inside sources have revealed that every one in five phone calls are recorded. With that in mind, one can only imagine the watch that must be on the Internet. There are many laws and acts that allow our government to do that exact thing. They claim to be stopping piracy and copyright infringement, and while that may be true, many people don’t understand the length that these acts are going. SOPA, an act already mentioned, is one of these. While it sounds like it would assist the problems at hand, the reality is it would be taking down websites such as Youtube.com, Wikipedia.org, and even the popular forum Reddit.com. Each of these websites are vast sources for entertainment, information, and speech. There are many petitions currently running to try and prevent this from happening. Not all Internet users are

" Trapped within a musty room in 1787, the Founding Fathers, of various backgrounds and prestige, came together to ignite a set of rules that were unmatched by any of the time. To initiate ratification, the citizens established their need to have their rights protected. The people were determined to ensure a non-dominating government was to be put in place. A stable foreground for America was laid to rest through the Bill of Rights. The first ten amendments notably discontinued the rumor of a continuity of dictation upon non-elites.…

Because online activities are treated like any other communications, the rules of privacy should apply. When people engage in online activities they have a legitimate expectation of privacy and this privacy is violated when the government accesses online activities without a warrant. The government should therefore not be allowed to access your online activities without a warrant. Moreover, there are situations where the government does not need a warrant but a court order to access this information. Despite the lesser evidence required for court orders, they nevertheless involve some adjudication on whether it is proper to infringe on the individual’s right to privacy.…

A complicated word isn't it, ‘censorship’. It comes from the Latin word ‘censere’ which means to give as one's opinion, something nonexistent in an Anthem society. Like many things, a world without censorship can be scary, but a world with too much of it, is a world with no meaning. Look at Anthem, the people who live in that society have no meaning, no life, no importance. Although many people can't imagine comparing the United States to an Anthem society, I believe the United States is an Anthem society because America has huge amounts of censorship when it comes to the press.…

" To what extent in the U.S. does the government-federal, state, and local-have the duty to monitor the internet content? I find myself pondering the argument of if it is okay for the government to watch internet activity. In some circumstances I am in favor of the U.S. government-federal, state, and local watching over what we do on the internet. Sometimes it can benefit us when solving crimes such as, the ""Dark web"" or pre-planned murder. For instance, Casey Anthony who researched on google how to make chloroform and how it is properly used.…

Censorship can be used in two ways: One being a potion that can give us knowledge about life, and a poison that can block the knowledge of what life is. Going through life experiences is a good way to learn new things and to learn between what is right and wrong. Censorship plays a role by controlling what a person experiences and doesn’t experience. The idea of the government monitoring internet content stems from good intent, but how can you tell if it has gone too far? Looking at the principle of limited government we see that some principles exist to protect the people. Limited government exists to protect the people from tyranny. Perhaps a good portion of governmental monitoring of content can be viewed as our nation being one step closer to a tyrannical state where there is no limited government. It is this principle that our founding fathers put into place to ensure that no governmental body became all powerful and all seeing.…

If we give people the freedom, they will not even think about using the internet for bad purposes but if we restrict the internet, they will want to rebel. This was the case in the early 1900's. Alcohol was banned by the government and the people did not listen. They bootlegged the alcohol because they did not have the access to it. Then in the 1920's, or the roaring 20's the ban on alcohol was lifted and everyone was partying.…

In his article entitled “Internet Access Is Not a Human Right” published on the website of The New York Times on 4 January 2012, Vincent G. Cerf, a vice president and chief Internet evangelist for Google, presents his perspective on a controversial issue regarding access to the Internet. He argues that access to the Internet should not be accepted as a human right, “it’s just a tool to achieve those rights.” According to Internet World Stats (2014), over a third of the world’s population are accessing the Internet as a part of their everyday life. This proves that the Internet plays numerous significant roles in society. It makes our lives easier and more convenient than in the past, by providing information, education, communication, business, and freedom of expression.…
