“Woman” dramatizes the conflict between the woman and the man on how he refuses to let her be someone. The speaker who is also the author tells the story of the man and the woman “he stood straight/declining to be her corner” (12-13). The author uses lines 12 and 13 to show how the man does not care enough to let her be someone and he in return be someone for her. The author targets the readers as audience with her tone of sympathy, sorrow, and in the last stanza the woman being courageous. “she turned herself into a bulb/ but he wouldn’t let her grow” (16-17). A unique trait of the poem, is how the author does not use periods anywhere throughout. As pervious stated, she uses the poem to guide light on how controlling and restrictive men can be. The author uses lines 1 through 17 as examples of how the woman tries to be someone and the man refuses to be someone for her. In lines 18 through 23 however, is where the theme can be found, but the woman decides to stand up for herself and leave. “and though he still refused/ to be a man/ she decided it was all/right” (20-23). This justifies her standing up for herself and leaving to be someone she has always wanted to be. The author is telling a story about a woman who wanted to be someone and wanted the man to be someone she needed him to be. The author uses words like “singing”, “spun”, and “looking” to create a time for the audience that it is a true story and the author is reflecting on a moment in the past.
