Parable of the Sower: Narrative
Explanatory Paragraph: In The Parable of the Sower, Octavia Butler suggests that survival is key. She implies that in the future death is inevitable and survival is a necessary skill to have. Lauren must live outside her community after the big fire. Because she has access to her father’s “library” of books, she is able to read on how to survive in the “wild”. These books teach Lauren what she can and cannot eat. Before the fire, Lauren’s father teaches her and other kids in the neighborhood how to shoot and be safe around a gun. These skills are extremely useful in surviving in the outside world. Surviving outside of the community wall is a very dangerous task, that Lauren’s younger brother, Keith, could not

She said that they needed to stick together in order to survive. She had watched many horror movies, and splitting up was always a bad thing. Carter, on the other hand, despised the genre. With Glenn’s death, Sam knew Carter couldn’t deal with another death. She didn't want to lose him either. Glenn had been like a brother to her, but Carter was much more. He was her boyfriend. They had been together ever since Sam’s parents were in the accident. That was five years ago. That was when the voices went away.
(But I’m back)
Sam and Carter moved out of the room with Glenn and into Carter’s bedroom. There, they made a game plan to catch whoever was doing this to them. Carter decided that they needed refreshments for this. Even though Sam objected, Carter left. As he walked off he said, “I’ll be back.” She believed him.
(Second Mistake)
After ten minutes, Carter didn’t return. Sam began to get worried. She headed down the hall to find him. Then out of nowhere, something grabbed her. She screamed at the top of her lungs for help. Her oversized shirt was tugged and spun her around. Her attacker covered his face with a mask, which she had flung off across the hallway. He had a face with cuts and scars all over. Scared of her screams, Sam’s attacker fled out into the backyard. Now was her chance. She ran and picked up the black mask he wore. A name was printed on the inside, “Frank Ellison”. In Parable of the Sower Octavia E. Butler develops Lauren as a protagonist who, as she grows, is a character with conflicting emotion. I believe this is done because Lauren is a teenager and so are a majority of the readers and as you develop you start to form your own beliefs on certain subjects. I can relate with Laurens religious dilemma, because I am currently questioning “what if” and it always buts me in a scary, uncomfortable position of which side I should take. As I think more and more about it i begin to be hesitant because if there is a higher entity than what will happen is I stop being faith to this higher entity. Lauren questioned God and compared him to greek god, I also began to do so because my Catholic God was developed later…

They were just teenagers complaining about school. But personally, to Sam, these messages had a deeper meaning and so the moments he shared with Chris were worthy to be remembered, even if he valued them as something they were not. Since Sam is constantly thinking about Chris, he did not put much effort into paying attention to what is going on in class. For example, he would daydream about being with Chris and having deep conversations about topics such as nature and livelihood. With all of Sam’s daydreams, he would be interrupted and brought back to reality due to the loud noise of the school bell.…

Antigone: a tragic tale “There is no happiness where there is no wisdom; no wisdom but in submission to the gods. Big words are always punished, and proud men in old age learn to be wise.” This quote is one that is representative of many tragic tales, in which a great lesson is learned too late for it to be put into use. I’ve always had the impression that fairytales were innocent stories of finding true love and living happily ever after, like the way Disney depicted them to be. I never thought about where these stories came from and the different themes and symbols that were relevant of that time. Some of the things I’ve learned about fairytales have not only shocked me, but has also made me reevaluate everything I know about fairytales. Something I never knew about fairytales is that they weren’t always for children.
