Is Everyone selfish? : An Explanatory Essay
A few days ago, in English class, we had a discussion about Physician-Assisted Suicide. Almost everyone in my class believes that it shouldn’t be authorized. I, on the other hand, am a proponent of Physician-Assisted Suicide. Simply, because I believe that everyone should do whatever they want. Then, in the state of confusion of not knowing why so many people disagree with my belief, a thought crossed my mind.
“Everyone is selfish!” I said loudly in my head. I want to say it out loud, but I didn’t. The truth is, I had no logical reasoning behind my statement. My abstract principle continued to follow me throughout the day. But was I wrong?
This generation is well known for our self-obsession. We have Instagram to exhibit our privilege and photography skills, Twitter to let everyone know what we are up to, Facebook to manifest how many friends we have, and Snapshot to show how much we party. Why don't they read a book” I heard many adults complain. My argument is as follows: everything we do is based on our Selfish thinking, therefore, everyone is selfish.
For instance, one of my classmates told me, “ I’m an opponent of Physician-Assisted Suicide, even though it mightn’t affect me directly. If I don’t protest those who want to authorize it, then it means that I’m being part of killing someone” My classmate opposes Physician-Assisted Suicide because they feel like it is their duty to do so. This shows that when we disagree or agree with someone or something it is because of our selfish thinking. What is selfish
