Based on my personal observations of the very limited information I had about her background prior to receiving this charge, she had several protective factors. She grew up in an upper class family with both parents involved in her life. She attended an elite private school and did not struggle with her education, in fact, she was an excellent student. However, after she moved to attend college, many risk factors surfaced. She surrounded herself socially with peers that were engaging in illicit drug use and her romantic relationship became violent. When the opportunity presented itself she engaged in illicit drug use that she eventually became addicted to and lead to her criminal conviction. Therefore, just because someone is raised with several protective factors does not mean those will always be a predictive factor in their likelihood to engage in drug usage later in life.
Personally, I have never engaged in any type of drug use. This is because I have never had the desire to and I could not risk a possible criminal drug charge on my record for the profession I want to enter.
