Explanation Of Owl City's Song 'Fireflies'

Improved Essays
Fireflies, lightning bugs, photurinae, all one in the same, all of these names are for one insect; the lovely, summer night firefly that children chase around and put in jars for a little lamp. Owl City’s song “Fireflies” describes the idea of a child’s lifelong dream of catching a jar full of fireflies and having a living nightlight, but as we all know the fireflies that are caught end up dying sooner rather than later. This song tells of how so many people just hurry through life and don't take time to appreciate the earth and what it does for us.

People who listen to this song tend to be enlightened of how much the population hustles and bustles through life. Owl City tells this with the lyrics “I'd like to make myself believe/That planet

When dragonflies mate, it 's under the beaming sun and it’s such a fast paced action that it can be seen as being lustful or lacking tenderness. While, in “Cherrylog Road” there is imagery and symbolism which makes it harder to decipher the story. For example, James Dickey writes about a kingsnake that is slithering on the floor as the narrator enters the junkyard. This is supposed to symbolize temptation because in the story of Adam & Eve, Eve got tempted to eat from the forbidden tree by the snake. Both writers use similar and different approaches but achieve intriguing the…

My Personal Playlist and Transcendental Justification Icarus, Bastille, 2011 I personally love this song simply because of the Greek Mythology reference, as well as the really cool entrance; and I think that transcendentalists might like it as well. My interpretation of this song is that it is talking about how young people search for happiness by doing dangerous and risky things (i.e. Icarus got excited and flew up towards the sun), that may lead to them getting hurt (the sun melting the wax off of Icarus’s wings and him falling to his death. Transcendentalists would like this interpretation, because they believe that although people try to bring happiness into their lives by relying on material things (ex. Drugs and Alcohol), this will never…

“Hello darkness, my old friend / I’ve come to talk with you again” (1-2). This line from the song lyrics “Sounds of Silence” by Paul Simon depicts a dark and familiar silence that many know all too well. At some point, plenty of people experience a dark, and occasionally, scary loss that is typically emotionally somber and tough. For instance, the poem by Robert Hayden, “Those Winter Sundays," looks back at his childhood of an unappreciated relationship. The following poem, “Nighttime Fires” by Regina Barreca, tells the loss of a little girl’s innocence due to her father’s loss of his job.…

When reading a poem e.g. Mayfly (the poem being analyzed in this essay) from the Shijing, it is imperative to ponder Kongzi’s intention in giving a certain poem a place in the compilation, since these poems have no direct authorial voice. They also, therefore, lend themselves to myriad interpretations during analysis. It needs to be noted that the Shijing is part of Kongzi’s Five Classics, and therefore a poem in the Shijing represents a meta-fragment of sorts; upon analysis it showcases certain facets of the concepts encompassed in the book, rather than completely formed concepts. Mayfly is a typical example of classical Chinese poetry; the words possesses both predominant and subsidiary meanings that lend themselves to various interpretations, and the effects of the auditory and visual stylistic and literary devices present in the poem are flexible enough to accommodate numerous analyses; this will be made evident in the course of this essay.…

Sometimes an individual’s desires cause them to face internal suffering. The poem “For That He Looked Not upon Her” by sixteenth-century English poet George Gascoigne explores this idea through illustrating the reasoning of why a man cannot look into the eyes of the women he once loved anymore. Gascoigne portrays the man in the poem as being hopeless and unable to unhook himself from the passion he has for the women which mesmerized him. Gascoigne depicts his hopelessness, and rather bleak almost cautious outlook on love after coming out of a bad relationship through the use of diction.…

“He felt the thud of the bodies, heard the fluttering of wings; but the birds were not yet defeated, for again and again they returned to the assault, jabbing his hands, his head, their little stabbing beaks sharp as pointed forks” (Daphne du Maurier’s The Birds). This enthralling scene is an excerpt from none other than Daphne du Maurier’s The Birds, and it inserts a perfect picture in the reader’s head of the suffering Nat is undergoing. In the short story The Birds, Nat must defend his family from the invasion of birds, and the author creates a suspenseful story with strong imagery during and after the raid of the birds.…

“Blank Space” written by singer/songwriter Taylor Swift was a huge success in 2014. The song brought already famous Taylor Swift more praise as it topped the charts and helped her become the first woman to top herself at the number one spot on the “Hot 100” (Trust). The song is written with a depth of heartbreak, attitude, mischief, and hope. Although sultry, and alluring at first listen, the song is about a woman who has been hurt many times in the past and is seeking someone to fill the void in her life.…

American Noise The song American noise is a song by the Christian band known as Skillet. This song to me is an anthem for the young generation of our society who feel like outcasts. The only element it lacks is to empower the listener that they have a voice.…

“Fireflies”, by Yoko Ota uses vivid imagery, which plays a significant role in this short story. These images are depicted that the readers obtain a sense of feeling that as if all of the events and objects described in this short story are actually happening to them. Ota captures and writes about others experiences after the bombing in Hiroshima by gathering her information and observing the aftermath and affects of what has happened to the people. The story focuses more on certain main images such as the site of the burned stonewall, the notion and the metaphor of the burning flame, the victim’s scars and radiation torn body features and the spirits of the dead soldiers.…

As the years go by, new political dramas and landmarks seem to be a dime a dozen. New wars, scandals, controversies, and otherwise seem to find their way into the mainstream media on the daily. Whether it be today, 20 years ago, or 50 years ago, getting your voice heard in the global sphere is troubling for younger generations. This sense of not being able to control the politics that affect your life can be found in “Waiting on the World to Change” by John Mayer.…

“Earth Song” is also one of my favorite songs from Michael Jackson. As a successful songwriter, Michael Jackson spent seven years on creating this song; it is one of the songs that took him a long time to finish. It is obvious that the themes of the “Earth Song” are anti-war and environmental aspects. One one hand, Michael Jackson expressed his passion and sympathy to all the creatures as well as the planet; on the other hand, he expressed his anguish of the fact that human beings bring pollution, destruction, and turmoil to the world. As a great songwriter, he wrote this song in order to arouse people’s awareness and consciousness in terms of what humanity have been doing to the world.…
