Explaining Classroom Activities

o Having several activities going on in a classroom is very common. In order to ensure that all students are on task and that they understand the activities, I will explain each activity in detail in a whole group setting. I will explain and model or show examples of each activity to my students before I break them into groups to complete the activities. Explaining everything in detail before beginning the assignments will allow the students to know what is expected of them for each activity. Students will have a chance to ask questions about any of the activities while we are in whole group. This can decrease the amount of interruptions during centers because other students may benefit from the question and answer of another student. The centers will be spread out throughout the classroom to ensure that each center has an appropriate amount of space to complete their activity, without being interrupted or distracted by another station. I will explain to students in whole group that they will have a specific amount of time in each center. Explaining everything in a whole group setting will cut down on the number of students who do not listen to directions and begin completing the assignment or get distracted by other students in their group or the materials in their station. Students will know and understand what is expected of them before they separate into their stations to complete the activities. Having all materials needed and a bin to turn in their finished product at each station will decrease the number of students who are roaming the room looking for supplies or turning in their work.
