In my opinion, the cases in our reading require teachers to behave in a professional manner and to exercise good judgment in choosing methods of teaching. The readings also indicate that when the public does not agree with material or political views, that in itself is not justification to suppress information in the school. In Pickering v. BOE, a case demonstrating freedom of expression, the teacher had the right to express their concern over how the BOE was handling public funds. Pickering’s letter did not implicate someone he would need to work with on a daily basis so it didn’t disrupt the harmony of the school or work with his colleagues and he conducted himself in a professional manner. Furthermore, his letter was an opposing opinion to the BOE, not an attack.…

Whistleblowing has been a topic of discussion in business for over a hundred years. While there are federally mandated regulations in place to protect whistleblowers, some still argue that whistleblowing is wrong. The main argument of these naysayers, like Norman Bowie and Sissela Bok, is that whistleblowing is an act of disloyalty to the company. In Ronald Duska’s article Whistleblowing II, he takes opposition to this stance. Throughout his article he makes three main points: employees have no obligation to remain loyal to a company, the primary function of business is profit, and the analogy between business and team is erroneous.…

The students at Rocktown High are generally commendable, but a few weeds tend to sprout up in their perfectly kept garden from time to time. However, that’s not to say that these weeds don’t have the right to privacy. Students who cheat are still students, and all are given the same rights. When word gets to Principal Smith that a few pupils cheated on an exam, then begins a string of small invasions of privacy. Britney’s texts are read because she is notorious for misconduct.…

People often look to colleges and universities as champions of education and basic human rights. However, they have unrightfully advocated internships because students believe them to be extremely valuable, and universities ignore their responsibility to educate students about their rights. In fact, college students understand internships to be so valuable that they will even sacrifice essential things in life for it, like housing. According to an article in the New York Times, “Unpaid Internships, Complicit Colleges” by Ross Perlin, universities often make it possible for large companies to avoid labor laws that are meant to protect workers such as student interns. As institutions of higher learning increasingly encourage, and sometimes…

Jones High School uses the zero tolerance policy when it comes to discipline, and that policy can create a lot of tension among stakeholders. My school is diverse, and that in itself is new to this school. The first problem I am facing is our district’s drug policy and the young lady that was sent to the office because of a mysterious pill that was found in her possession that supposedly is for allergies.
