Why is it important to collect data using multiple sources? The reason data from multiple sources needs to be collected is so the the evaluator can obtain a better understanding of the individual needing assistance. Student records should be reviewed for information on when the problem first started, how intense is the problem and what interventions have already been used. Also, this source of information will produce data on demographics, attendance, test scores and teacher comments, which gives important insights into the student. Another source of information would be interviews of the parents, teachers and if appropriate, the student. This data contributes a different viewpoint to the situation that is helpful in understanding concerns. One is that as a teacher, you need to know what information your students comprehend in order to create appropriate lesson plans. This can be done by using an assessment to discover the strengths and weakness of your students on a particular topic. In other words, if the students already know the what clouds, rain and blizzards are, you would not want to teach this information. But, you would want to expand on this concepts but creating lessons on how to prepare for blizzards or floods. Once the topic has been taught a different assessment can be used to determine if the information has been learned or needs to be retaught. In addition, teachers use assessments is to determine grades for students. This would be in the form of tests to confirm students have learned the material.
