Why Go to College? Jiddu Krishnamurti once wrote, “There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from that moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.” People go to college to get a direction for life. They want to grow and become better. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the holder of a bachelor’s degree will make an average of $40,478 per year as opposed to just $22,895 for high school graduates. I want to go to college to make enough money to support my family. However, the myriad benefits of college attendance beyond ensuring a higher salary include learning about advanced knowledge, adapting and communicating better. One benefit of attending college is learning about advanced knowledge in the coming years. Innovations will come such as computers, cells phones, and cars. Learning about these things through college will prepare me and escalate my education for my future. Robert S. Feldman once wrote, “No one knows what the future will hold, but you can prepare for it through a college education.” No one wants to be obsolete in the future. Another benefit of higher education is adapting. Being prepared to adapt to new situations and encounters is a big key to success in college. Although, making more money will help out a lot, college could prepare you for many other things. College teaches students how to understand, how to adapt, how to communicate, and prepare for the future. We just have to be willing to learn and grow, so that we can become more autonomous.
