Being an engaged global citizen means knowing, and caring, that everything and everyone is connected. It means understanding that my choices and actions have consequences beyond myself. More than that, it means feeling a responsibility to consider those consequences when making decisions. Growing up as a Unitarian Universalist, I learned to respect the interdependent web which connects us all. When I was fifteen, I traveled to Haiti on a medical mission trip. While preparing for the trip, I learned about the living conditions in Haiti and some basic ways to make improvements. Teachers who are connected to their communities will inspire their students to become engaged in working for positive change as well. I want to become the kind of teacher who inspires students, encouraging them to connect with their neighborhood and to work toward making the world a better place. Attending Appalachian State will help me merge my desire to become a teacher with my desire to create a more sustainable path for communities in both the United States and in under-developed countries. I appreciate that the University has recognized that it has work to do in

Being a student at Queen’s University taught me that the opportunities we seek out teach us about our character and more importantly, about our passions in life; they help us to define our goals and will lead us to be successful. I have been fortunate to gain valuable experience as a Queen’s student, orphanage volunteer, and drop in center volunteer. My experiences shaped my understanding of teaching and learning processes as I learned the valuable qualities that are exhibited by successful educators that establish supportive learning environments for their students. While working in Romanian orphanages this past summer, I learned how each child presents their own challenges as they learn, and communicate differently. In a short time with a great deal of patience and dedication I learned enough of the language as I led games, bible studies, and helped children with conflict resolution.…

Often individuals, particularly students, are told that this world is a cruel place and they must learn to withstand it. My hope as a future educator is to teach students that the world is not a place to be withstood; that is not their purpose: they are here to make the world a little less cruel. Perhaps I could do this within my personal relationships but, as a Christian, I am called to go out into the world and share the gospel. The gospel is overflowing with sacrificial love and I hope my career mirrors the love I have received from Christ.…
