Explain Why Highschoolers Shouldn T Work

Decent Essays
As a highschooler myself I believe that high schoolers shouldn’t work. Once every teenager starts high school the first thing everyone wants is money and independence. I feel like students are pressured into working since they have reached the age to actually start working and receiving their very first paychecks. Over the years researchers have noticed that students working more than three hours tend to have their grades decreased in less than a month. Students tend to focus on making money when working much more than education itself. So the main question here is should teens work? I personally think no, students should not be able to work. I feel like as teens it should be the last thing in mind. Throughout our whole life as adults all we are focusing on is working. I feel like as teens we should enjoy these moments right now where we don't have to worry about more responsibilities besides our school work, sports, or even playing instruments. As teenagers we already have enough pressure to deal with and having a job would be added stress. Having a job would drain students energy and students would not have sufficient energy for school and their afterschool activities like sports. Research shows that when teens work for 20 …show more content…
I feel like having school already is enough stress and coming home from a job and then doing homework wouldn't really allow me to complete my school work because of the fact that I would be really drained and wouldn't hold any energy. Staying up late to finish school work would just allow me to have very little sleep and no energy at school the next day which would slowly start affecting grades in school. Higher rates of being absent in school which will cause more school work to accumulate and grades to drop. Teens that tend to work more than 13 hours a week tend to have less time with their friends and family and studies show that drug and alcohol use becomes a stress reliever when

I believe high school students should have jobs, to save for their future and should help their families whenever it is necessary. While working, students can develop the skills needed to handle money. In Etzioni’s article, he assumes that when a teenager gets money, a large amount of it is spent on useless items. However, teens working at “the cash register” (par. 9) realize how important money is to succeed. Many students are saving for college or paying bills to support themselves, to help not only better their future, but…

Bob Battles supports this by stating, “Plus, your average teen doesn’t have the same skills that a worker in, say, their 20’s have.” (Battles pg. 22) Another issue is that teens are restricted by law as to what jobs they can do. Battles stated, “At grocery stores, for example, teens under 18 can bag goods, but they aren’t allowed to operate a cardboard-box compactor. ”(Battles…

He best describes it by stating “… but it is often, especially in the middle class, spent largely and wholly by the teens” (Etzioni 18). He also argues that “… But large amounts seem to flow to pay for an early introduction into the most trite aspects of American consumerism: flimsy puck clothes, trinkets and whatever else is the last fast moving craze” (Etzioni 18). He points out that when teenagers have money from working, they will mostly spend it because working at fast-food chain does not teach them how to manage money. I disagree with Etzioni about this argument because I believe working can help high school students understand the value of money due to the fact that they have to do work in order to money for their needs. Nowadays, there are ton of things that teenagers can spend money on; it is not easy to get everything that your children want if you do not make enough.…

After reading the story “Working at McDonald’s” by Amitai Etzioni I agree with Etzionis thesis that overall there are pros and cons of working part time as a teenager. If I were to have to choose a side I would have to disagree with Etzioni. Etzioni believes that there are more negatives than positives involved. However, I believe that in this situation the pros outweigh the cons.…

When we were kids, we were in awe of adulthood and how we could do any job that we wanted to do. Now that is becoming more of a reality for older students. As school nears its final years for those students, they have to decide what path fits them the best. As Marian Wright Edelman once said, “Never work just for money or for power.
