If guns really kept the United States safe, the U.S would be the safest place in the world. Far from keeping Americans safe, guns are used to kill more than 30,000 Americans each year (Watkins). Many people use guns for self protection, but a household member with a gun is more likely to accidentally shoot himself, than to be used to injure or kill an intruder in their self defense. Although, handgun bans fail to protect people than prevent Americans from using handguns as an effective means of self-defense. Gun’s should be banned, because too many people are getting guns illegally, people use guns to harm and some use guns to protect others, and the Second Amendment only allowed people to have guns when there was a Militia. A Militia is a military force in 1791.

Expanding background checks on legal purchases would be smart, but would that be effective in crime because many of those guns are obtained illegally. However, many people with legal guns are obtained in ways that would not use background checks. Statistically it has been reported: 73% of people obtain guns from buying it, 19% receive it as a gift, 3% traded something for it, and 5% inherited it (National Institute of Justice).
