How Did Napoleon Fail in Russia
Napoleon Bonaparte was a remarkable, fearless, and very notable leader of world history. He was the leader of one of the top European powers in history, in the nation of France. He is in company with others greats such as Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great as one of the great leaders of Human history. His triumphs are in abundance as he is highlighted by some of his great victories throughout his leadership. Many people look at his victories more often that his losses. There Napoleon was expecting to receive more supplies for his army. The supplies failed to get there and left Napoleon and his man even more stranded than they already were. Many of Napoleon's men were in severe condition and just clinging to life. He still has about 40,000 soldiers but only around 20,000 are able-bodied and fit for war. Napoleon hoped to use the hospitals in Smolensk. However, when he got there, he soon realized that they were already full and lacked the room for his men. This was the last straw for Napoleon as he decided to leave his men there and personally retreat back to France.
Not long after Napoleon retreated to France, the Grande Armée stumbled back into France full of illness and despair. His largest army in human history had been defeated thoroughly. By the time the war was over only 20,000 troops remain from the original mass of 500,000; which is only 4%. 96% of Napoleon's great army had died of the diseases, lack of food, freezing, and brutal warfare throughout the campaign.
