Question 1- Elijah Anderson’s “code of the street” suggests that individuals that are living in areas with high crime, low incomes, drug problems, high violence, and widespread availability to guns, live according to a code of conduct that requires a threating and sometimes harmful disposition with respect at the heart to protect their territory (Halnon, 2001). Additionally, Anderson explains how the individuals in these areas demonstrate a thug or dominate attitude as a means to protect business (illicit activity, drugs), and it gives them a sense of physical security in an area they feel is restricted. (Halnon, 2001). More Specifically, the areas that Anderson is referring to are the inner cities and public housing projects. Furthermore,…

In “The Three Cities Within Toronto” by J. David Hulchanski, the author asserts that incomes in Toronto’s neighbourhoods and suburbs have become increasingly polarized since 1970 and can be understood as three distinct cities: city #1 comprises the relatively stagnant high-income core, city #2 is the shrinking middle income segment, dispersed throughout Toronto, and city #3 is the growing low income segment which surrounds the core. My field work in the Yonge and Wellesley area and beyond supports and builds upon Hulchanski’s findings; there is strong evidence of income polarization between the site in city #1 to city #2 demonstrated primarily through a change in retail form, decreased access to transportation, and the presence of immigrant…

I conducted my windshield survey in Clinton Township, MI. While driving I noticed a good amount of people running and riding their bikes on the trail that leads to metro beach. Nearby were quite a few medical buildings; these findings make me believe that health is an important factor for the community. The roads are decent with a few pot holes. There was a lot of traffic on metro parkway (at 3:30pm); this gives me insight that this community is a working community.…

I currently reside in Markham, the city is a part of York Region and is located just north of Toronto. I moved there at the end of eighth grade, and since then it has been my hometown. Markham is a boring place to be, rarely does anything eventful ever happens, and there is really nothing to do, there is a mall, a theatre and occasionally there’s a festival, which is pretty much it. This is aided by the fact that crime is low in the city, there are few murders and little robberies, with most notable crimes being the occasional weed deal here and there. Markham is also a quiet place, mainly thanks to a small population, the minimal traffic and lack of pedestrians keeps noise to a minimum.…

The Midwest is home to states with rich cultural backgrounds and popular tourist attractions. To take a break from the busy schedule I have as a student, and to avoid writing more essays like this, I went on a vacation to Michigan with my mother and two siblings. We visited South Haven, a pleasant port city on Lake Michigan’s east coast, and Detroit, the famous largest city in Michigan. These areas interest me because there’s plenty to do; there are amazing restaurants, breath-taking scenery, and family-friendly, inexpensive entertainment. South Haven is famed for its relaxed atmosphere and homely feel.…

As I searched journals and websites for material on the research involving auto thefts, I found very few articles. In fact, according to one author, motor vehicle thefts are the number one under-researched part one crime (Jeffrey Walsh, 2007).
