Without farther study, or evidence, readers should not be made to believe that most people associate the word “assimilation” with the year 1950, whose ideals are sixty-six years old. Jacoby (2004) makes her opinion on assimilation clear when she states, “As for the melting pot, if anything, that seems even more threatening: who wants to be melted down, after all- for the sake of national unity or anything else?” (p. 423). This quotation creates the feeling that individualism is far more important than the unity of the country to the author. Although individualism is an extremely important concept, it is crucial to have national unity in a country as large as the Unites States.…
In David Brook’s article, “People Like Us”, he discusses how America is not really diverse. The United States as a whole has always identified as being a diverse country. In a way, this is true. There are people of all kinds of races, religions, personalities, political views, interest, and so forth, but yet there is still a lack of diversity. Diversity would be when all of the nation would be unified despite differences.…
Some of us have repeatedly taken for granted what our culture has to offer. Certain individuals spend too much time pretending to be something they are not and too often forget to embrace the fact they are special in their own way. Others constantly judge people because of where they come from. Many think they are better than others and discriminate upon them heavily. Society has played a huge impact on the acceptance of cultural diversity over time and influenced negative beliefs to many in order to portray the view of a perfect individual.…
Intro Through out life we become so identified with our own culture and circumstances, that we loose sight of others situations. To become more of a realistic and understanding individual it is important for us to remember that we are not all the norm, that others around us have different circumstances that we should all be aware of. That is the essence of multiculturalism. Is being a part of knowledge’s around you, not just your own.…
The issue over removing Confederate statues has sparked many debates and emotions throughout the U.S. Hate speech stirs emotions, so do these statues. This made me think of the debate over if hate speech is protected by the freedom of speech. Hate speech is a terrible thing. But, it needs to be protected.…
An american is everyone who is in this country and wants to be here to appreciate our freedoms and to make their life better. Whether a person is brought over to America for some reason or they choose to come here, they are American if they make their home here and gain a love of this country. They can come from all over the world which is what makes this country to diverse, and as some call it, The Melting Pot. From Equiano being brought over as a slave and then gaining his freedom, to the Puritans choosing to come here for religious freedom and great choices of land. All people who have ended up in our country, and have made it a place they want to be, add to what makes an American.…
Throughout my life I have been part many diverse cultures and of many community that contain a wide range of race and ethnicity. I was born in Ecuador and moving to the United States was a huge slap in the face. The culture and the way thing were done here compared to my home country was totally different. The life style in Ecuador was harsh and unpleasing but in the states life was so much more pleasurable with all the opportunities that are given me. The only problem is that people where closed minded.…
If you could place a dot on a map of a typical white suburb it would be Tempe, Arizona. I grew up here and so did my parents and neighbors. Tempe, Arizona is all I know because it is the only thing I have seen and heard of. Don’t get me wrong Tempe is a strong community, but it is like everyone is trapped here. I like to call my community a bubble.…
ASKED ASSESSMENT Awareness I am aware that there are many different cultures and each have their own personnel beliefs and values. I believe that everyone has the right to practice their cultural beliefs. I am just leaning about my own cultural background which has been a very interesting process. I am aware that there are many types of racism in the world today.…
“The simple truth is that you can understand a town. You can know and love and hate it. You can blame it, resent it, and nothing changes. In the end, you’re just another part of it.” This quote Brenna Yovanoff relates to me especially after I hit the age of two years old.…
North America stands to be one of the most diverse population and all the thanks can be given to the many immigrants who took the chance to leave behind the comfort of their home in hopes of a better future. Not only did these immigrants make North America so diverse, it also enabled there to be an interaction of different cultures impacting the ethnic and social makeup of the U.S. Starting from the 19th centuries many immigrants rushed in from Europe during the massive innovations in technology and transportations. Many were attracted by the offering of cheap land near the Great lakes regions and in the valleys of Ohio, Cumberland and Mississippi rivers. Moreover, population boomed specially during the industrial development time period.…
I believe that the University of Georgia Honors Program would open up countless doors for me throughout my UGA career, and it would allow me to thrive and contribute to a smaller environment of more dedicated and passionate students. Coming from a small, very academically advanced private school, I am very familiar with and fond of this type of environment. I also believe that my high school experience, in such a unique and diverse school, would allow me to contribute greatly to the honors community. The Honors Program’s access to smaller class sizes would allow me to be in closer contact with my teachers, something that I benefited from greatly in high school.…
Every morning, with tired eyes we mindlessly place our right hands atop our hearts and recite the national pledge. We wave our flag proudly at Fourth of July festivities, smiling with joy. Every two years we cheer on the United States team as they compete in the Olympics. We show appreciation towards our home country regularly, yet how often do we stop and question what it really means to be an American. It is inarguable that America is a land of unique inhabitants and cultures.…
In his essay, “People Like Us”, David Brooks defends his claim that the United States is not composed of those seeking a culturally diverse environment, but rather those segregating into pods of similar people, stating that, “what I have seen all around the country is people making strenuous efforts to group themselves with the people who are basically like themselves” (Brooks). I agree with this statement, as I myself am guilty of this and tend to gravitate towards those who I am most comfortable amongst and who I feel I can be my true self with. For instance, I tend to spend time with people who enjoy the…
It spreads diversity and enlarges the cultures as the Unites States. America is referred to as the great “melting pot” because we are composed of all types of people from everywhere in the world. Diversity presents new ideas, new viewpoints, new music, nourishments, diverse customs, and new forms of entertainment. It also develops the general image if America globally, as it is…
