All over the world, books of all varieties are being banned. Books should never be banned, because it stops the world from having a variety of material to learn from. Books should not be banned based on a group's beliefs, the ban denies an author freedom of speech, and the laws which prove whether a book is obscene or not are very unclear. Books should not be banned based on a single person or group's religious, moral, or political beliefs.The world has many different religions and political parties, as well as many individuals who each have different moral and personal beliefs. All of these different factors mean that not everyone will agree on the ban of a book, therefore causing arguments. When a book gets banned, the author may end up involving the courts, especially if the author feels that, "… his or her freedom of speech is being impeded." (¶ 3). When freedom of speech is being impeded, an outcry supporting the victims often happens, which could result in millions of dollars being used to take cases to court. Furthermore, the use police force may be needed to stop protests which could be a result of the courts choice. Banning books takes away the right to speak freely, because it is telling the public that they can have opinions, but that they cannot do anything with their thoughts, such as write and publish a novel. Many groups, such as 'Freedom to Read' , which is a branch of the Books and Periodicals Council, are fighting for freedom of speech and the toleration of all material that could be considered controversial.
