In this world, there is two types of people, the humble ones, and the ones that like to humiliate others. John Steinbeck, wrote a novella called The pearl he loves the ocean, and this might be one of the reasons why he called it the way. Steinbeck takes its reader to a whole different world, where it will show a clear picture with words of how people, treat ignorant people. He just doesn't want to show, but also leave a powerful message. Things can be imagend in many forms, it can be good, but most of the time we think of something and the coin flips the other way. On the previous nights where Lennie and George slept, John Steinbeck continues to show a very peaceful mood by creating the setting down by the river where you can see the tranquil sunset. During this sunset, the air is calm with willow trees whose branches and leaves drift swiftly with the wind. The mountains in the background make graceful shadows over the sunset as you can see in the distance. Most importantly the sunset reflects on the Salinas River where Lennie and George can now see the warm colored sunset. Also from this, John Steinbeck says, “The flame of the sunset lifted from the mountaintops and dusk came into the valley, and a half darkness came in among the willows and the sycamores.…

In John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, multiple individuals harbor a natural-born evil within themselves. Steinbeck reveals this idea through an allusion to the Bible’s telling of the story of Cain, an envious brother branded with a mark of evil after killing his brother, Abel. Characters throughout the novel, such as Charles, Cathy, and Cal, depict Cain in various ways, usually possessing a similar name and nature to his. Steinbeck’s portrayal of Cain and his mark contribute to the connection between seemingly evil characters and their intended fate.…

Often times we talk to individuals about their favorite vacation spot or where the place they feel the most at rest is; the response we get most often is the ocean. This is because the ocean is restorative. The quiet roar of the waves, the sound of seagulls chirping, the salty breeze, the ocean is a place of peace. For many the sea is not just a vacation destination, but the sea is a friend. Something that is consistent, and always listening.…

On William Hazlitt’s “On the Pleasure of Hating”, he writes about the many different ways people show and act out their petulance and hostility toward other living beings, including their own human kind . Hazlitt makes no big arguments but instead, all his essays build up with well-drawn points to create a conclusion. Hazlitt argues that it is human nature to hate and to exploit the misery in other beings. It is our own self-knowledge of the undesirable within us that leads us to chase and despise what we see as bad: we are self-loathing, self-criticizing, but look outwards to inflict punishment on others to cover up our own insecurities.…

In East of Eden, John Steinbeck communicates the reliance of the human soul on free will to establish itself, which proves to be true to an extent, but, considering a Christian worldview, other variables such as God’s image, original sin, and forgiveness influence the human soul’s construction. Steinbeck attempts the challenging task of exploring the enigmatic basis of humanity, ultimately reasoning the human soul requires free will in order to exist. While I argue that Steinbeck does not succeed in presenting the complete image of the human soul, he captures essential components of it through valid arguments concerning “original sin” in relation to free will. It is evident that Cathy’s bestial identity potentially resides within Cal.…

The mood Steinbeck creates in the last paragraph of the chapter is a mood of sadness and distance. Steinbeck uses words such as “saw” (114) to emphasize the increasing distance between the Joads and the house. By using “saw”, it shows that everything they were seeing was their past and their past would slowly fade away until it was nothing more. The author also uses the word “forlornly” (114) to describe Muley showing the sadness and loneliness of the paragraph. Steinbeck creates the feeling that Muley is the only farmer left after the Joads leave for…

Elizabeth Breault October 6,2017 Essay 1 “How can human beings be so brutal to their own kind”? This powerful and thought provoking question was raised by Riane Eisler in her novel The Chalice in the blade; this is a question that could be answered in so many different ways depending on when you ask, who you ask, or in what way you ask. Eisler’s novel refers to times long ago where people lived in partnership with each other and valued equality. These values were overcome by the influences of a society heavily influenced and dominated by men. These influences resulted in a significant shift in the way people interact- from partnerships and equality to fierce competition and a greater divide.…
